  Windtalkers (2002): Reviews
Windtalkers is the best of Woo's American movies, and the one with the sturdiest and most direct links to his earlier pictures.
Windtalkers is to movies what Paris is to weather -- if you don't like the show you're watching, just wait a minute and an entirely different picture will blow into view.
The strength of Windtalkers is in its occasional, all-too-short respites from battle, when Enders is struggling with his demons and Yahzee is trying to understand his aloofness.

The United States used the Navajo Code Talkers, or "windtalkers" and their language since it provided the most secure method of communication in their operations in the Pacific.
"Windtalkers" portrays the horrors of the Pacific battles vividly and no side seems right as long as they have a gun in their hand.
As it stands, Windtalkers consists of great visuals and sound effects, good direction, a heart and an interesting story told by a cast of equal velour.

 Filmtracks: Windtalkers (James Horner)
Windtalkers: (James Horner) Supposedly delayed due to the terrorist attacks last year, both the film and score album for Windtalkers are now slowly reappearing on the horizon.
When Horner's name was mentioned as a candidate for assignment to Windtalkers, many of his fans and followers immediately recalled his work for the early 1990's film Thunderheart, for which Horner took a minimal ensemble and created a huntingly effective Native American score.
Horner utilizes a very restrained combination of ethnic vocal chants and a single native flute to constitute the Navajo story, and while both efforts succeed to the extent to which they were used, the majority of the score suffers without them.

In the second half of Windtalkers they are fighting for their friends, their family, even their enemies at times, and this leads to heart-rending scenes of military carnage that almost makes up for the hour of crappiness one has to sit through in order to get there.
Earlier in Windtalkers, Enders receives a medal for the accomplishments of his Navajo friend - it would seem whoever was responsible for the closing shots missed a crucial point somewhere.
Watching Windtalkers is an exercise in mixed emotions - on one hand, the brilliance of the second half is a giddy thrill after the cinematic squalor of the first.

Windtalkers (R) Originally slated for release last November, John Woo's Windtalkers was delayed by its studio, MGM, partly because it was unsure how a violent WWII film would be received when a real-life military operation was just beginning.
Windtalkers will inevitably be compared--negatively--to his previous war film, the harrowing 1990 Hong Kong production Bullet in the Head, which was set during the Vietnam War.
Windtalkers is nowhere near as dark and uncompromising, and per the patriotic American climate these days it's not above a tiny bit (but no less annoying) shameless flag waving at the very end.

 WINDTALKERS
When the men are sent to take the strategically important island of Saipan, Windtalkers falls into just about every clichéd trap that there is. Enders refuses to get friendly with Yahzee, partly because he's a dick but also because it will make Yahzee more difficult to take out if/when the time comes.
The very pro-American Yahzee has trouble fitting in with the other soldiers and becomes so horrified at what he sees on the battlefield that he can't even muster the courage to discharge his weapon when his life is in danger (but before you know it, he's offing Japs left and right).
His Face/Off is one of the best American action films ever made, but with Windtalkers and M:I-2 (not to mention his other post-Hong Kong films, Broken Arrow and Hard Target), I'm just about ready to write the guy off.

The U.S. government's use of Navajo Marines to transmit encrypted military information during the Pacific battles of World War II is one of those amazing, little-known sidebar stories of wartime ingenuity, patriotism, and bravery on which victory turned.
The solution in Windtalkers, a big, old-fashioned American war pic of the ''every guy in the unit signifies a type'' variety, seizes on the notion that those Marine guards were more concerned with protecting the code itself than the lives of its talkers.
''Windtalkers'' is a fresh contribution to the cinematic literature of American WWII movies from a Chinese-born director with a flair for the imagery of spiritual battle.

THE disappointing "Windtalkers" is a depressing example of how even the most promising subjects - in this case, World War II Navajo code talkers - can get turned into sentimental mush by Hollywood.
It's stunning that such a patronizing story would be directed by Woo, Hollywood's most successful minority director, who presumably has the clout to call the shots.
"Windtalkers" betrays the master action director's touch in the big battle scenes, which rival "Saving Private Ryan" and "We Were Soldiers" for sheer battle gore - though Woo succumbs to the cliché of Japanese soldiers flinging themselves into G.I. machine-gun fire.

I am almost at pains to say so, but on the whole Windtalkers bored me. Horner rarely does this; if nothing else, Horner's music is usually interesting and worth taking the time to listen to.
But, here, its as though he intentionally drew the majority the heart and colour from his score, leaving instead a soulless musical shell that is technically sound but bereft of anything remotely resembling emotion.
Coupled with its plethora of self-quotations and a strange lack of individual personality, Windtalkers is ultimately a score which fails to ignite.

'Windtalkers' is not so much a war movie as an exemplary John Woo movie, with tons of Unreal-Tournament-like action.
In short, the plot is about a US Marine during the Pacific war, who is assigned to protect a 'windtalker', a Navajo indian, employed to provide an unbreakable code by using his native language.
In 'Windtalkers' their role is played by wounded buddies who need to be extracted under enemy fire and against overwhelming odds.

Recognizing the long-forgotten contribution of Navajo "code talkers," whose use of an unbreakable Navajo-language radio code was instrumental in defeating the Japanese, the film serves as an admirable tribute to those Native American heroes.
Windtalkers is best appreciated as a more substantial vehicle for Woo's trademark ballet of bullets.
Windtalkers is the story of two American soldiers (one played by Christian Slater, the other played by Nic Cage) who are assigned to protect two Navajo soldiers who work as windtalkers, transmitting messages past Japanese codebreakers using their code based on Navajo language.

Yet, when I received my invitation for an advanced screening of Windtalkers, I couldn't help but notice that this was a John Woo film.
Windtalkers supposedly tells the story of two such code talkers and of their "bodyguards" who were assigned to protect the code at all costs...even if that meant shooting the code talkers should they be captured.
On the whole, Windtalkers is a very disappointing experience, even though it does have a few good scenes here and there.

 AboutFilm.com - Windtalkers (2002)
In Windtalkers, Woo continues to display visual artistry, but it's not directed with the imaginative abandon of The Killer or even Face/Off.
This is, after all, a World War Two movie intent on recognizing the achievements of under-appreciated Navajo Indians who served in the Marines, where they used their native language as the basis of a radio code never broken by the Japanese.
A more central problem is that Windtalkers fails to achieve its goal of relating the history of the Navajo codebreakers (not that one necessarily goes to a film like Windtalkers, or any non-documentary, desiring to be educated).

This concept is interesting and perfect for a Hollywood movie, but the story fails to explore the possibilities, and even worse it fails to demonstrate the accomplishment and importance of such a code and the men who made it possible.

Woo at first concentrates on Enders’ initial reserve toward Yahzee (so his detachment will make it easier to kill him if need be), and his gradual turning, as he sees in the family-oriented and spiritual Yahzee everything he admires.
And by revealing the Navajo’s reverent respect for the earth - and its people - against a backdrop of military carnage, Windtalkers is a deeply poignant reminder of the absurdity of war.
But it does posit racial tolerance within its thematic framework, promoting through the Navajo creed that we should fight against tyranny and oppression, not culture or appearance.
