Author Larson says he knows there are various theories on where "Windy City" got its start, but he supports the idea of editor Dana's influence during the rancorous exchanges between New York and Chicago over the world's fair.
In the mid-1990s, Popik set his sights on "Windy City," and started scanning hundreds of editions of the New York Sun -- a newspaper that was published from 1833 to 1950 -- in the New York Public Library.
Popik's references solidly establish that `Windy City' was a Chicago nickname that preceded Dana and the fight to secure the world's fair," says Samuelson, Chicago's cultural historian.

An attorney representing Circuit nightclub filed affidavits at the Chicago City Clerk's office Aug. 23 from 36 voters requesting that their signatures be removed from petitions aimed at putting the gay club out of business by voting its precinct dry.
If the petitions are found by the City Clerk to be signed by voters representing 25 percent of the total voters who voted in the last election in the precinct, a referendum to vote the precinct dry would be placed on the Nov. 2 election ballot.
Should the City Clerk and the Board of Elections determine, after reviewing the revocation affidavits, that enough of the 242 signatures filed on the DiLisios' petitions are still valid, Shiller and Circuit's owners would then be able to file additional challenges to the petitions in Cook County Circuit Court.
