WINFIELD C. In November 1970 Winfield Dunn defeated Democratic Party nominee John J. Hooker and became the first Republican to be elected governor of Tennessee in a half-century.
Winfield Dunn was born on July 1, 1927, in Meridian, Mississippi, to Aubert C. and Dorothy Crum Dunn.
Dunn was not eligible for reelection in 1974 and was succeeded in the governor's office by Democrat Ray Blanton.

With its 132,000 square feet, the Winfield Dunn Health and Physical Education Building has been the home court of the Govs and Lady Govs since 1973, when ground was broken on the $5.3 million structure.
