wing chun is a movie that is more a shakespearean play about mistaken identities and love than an out and out kung fu action film.
one aspect of the film that impressed me was the wonderful aural experience which accompanied the breathtaking imagery, such as the uncanny ability of american foley artist marko costanzo to replicate the audio action of hong kong action films.
with films like drunken master two, fist of legend, tai chi master and wing chun under his belt, and with master action heroes like chow yun fat, michelle yeoh and cheng pei pei at his command, it becomes obvious that there must be some reason for the apparent abuse of the wire fighting effect.

Along the way, she meets up with a childhood friend (Yen) who supposedly loves Wing Chun, but doesn't recognize her due to her adopting of male clothes and mannerisms.
But Yeoh's scenes are quite exciting and unique; the "tofu showdown" where she must keep one of the bandits from chopping a piece of tofu is a masterpiece and literally something you won't see anywhere else.
They're dealt with in such a heavy-handed and hammy way (the scene where Yen finally recognizes Wing Chun is cheesy beyond belief) that they just seem tacked on and unnecessary -- even the more so because there is little resolution to the various romances at the end of the film.

Wing Chun is a martial-arts film with an unusual feminist bent, inspired by a true historical figure.
On his return, he immediately falls in love with Charmy, mistaking her for Wing Chun -- and mistaking the real Wing Chun for a man. These farcical manueverings provide the backdrop for numerous fight sequences, which are filled with astoundingly acrobatic choreography skillfully performed by Hong Kong action star Michelle Yeoh.
Especially notable is the final showdown between Wing Chun and the bandits, which proves once and for all it's not the size of the weapon, but the way that you use it.

Wing Chun was made to cash in on the ever growing popularity of the more modern styled period martial arts film, a trend that really began when the wirework enhanced choreography of Once Upon a Time In China won audiences over and, for a brief time, was all the rage in HK cinema.
