ancient wingdings thread -- Triangle and Robert Discussion
wingdings is a bit of a pain, i'm not sure if the u was a u or the u was a v was a typo.
i got "be sure to," guessed the rest, changed the font to wingdings to confirm my suspicions, and wept softly.
if there are any other wingdings transcriptions, other than the log dates, i'd love to know about them, that is, i haven't seen them in half a year at least, and they've been forgotten.

Young calculated the odds of three letters of the alphabet being combined with 255 symbols, and said he found that the odds of obtaining the message were less than one in a trillion.
The conclusion was that the sequence in the Wingdings character set is coincidental and that there was no malicious intent.
At the simplest level, wingdings and webdings are much like an alphabet of characters and provide thousands of potential combinations from which a person could choose.

Wingdings "Trick" Reveals Images of 9/11 Tragedy - BreakTheChain.org
Typing "Q33NY" in the Windows Wingdings font produces pictures of an airplane, two pieces of paper (which, could, I guess, resemble the twin towers of the world trade center if you squint really hard), a skull and crossbones, and a star of David.
One problem with both of these explanations is that Microsoft created Wingdings as part of its Windows 3.0 operating system in the late 1980s.
The Wingdings font is a collection of small images, most used in some aspect of the Windows operating system.

Q33 NY Wingdings Hoax - Elevens and the Wrath of the Eagle
Email claims that entering Q33 NY in the Wingdings font reveals a combination of symbols that reflect the 2001 attack on the Twin Towers.
However, a minimal amount of research reveals that the Wingdings claim is based on an outrageous lie and therefore has no validity what so ever.
Flight and tail numbers aside, the Star of David in the Wingdings "message" has little relevance to 9/11 since the attacks were not perpetrated by or directed at those of Jewish faith.

 Wingdings Family
The Wingdings fonts were designed by Kris Holmes and Charles Bigelow in 1990 and 1991.
Renamed, reorganized, and released in 1992 as Microsoft Wingdings, the three fonts provide a harmoniously designed set of icons representing the common components of personal computer systems and the elements of graphical user interfaces.
In addition, Wingdings includes icons with both traditional and computer significance, such as writing tools and hands, reading glasses, clipping scissors, bell, bomb, check boxes, as well as more traditional images such as weather signs, religious symbols, astrological signs, encircled numerals, a selection of ampersands and interrobangs, plus elegant flowers and flourishes.

The characters that appear in the Wingdings Character column of the following table are generated by the non-standard technique of specifying the Windings font, using face="Wingdings">.

Wingdings are those funny looking fonts in Microsoft Word, the ones with symbols and pictures instead of letters.
In the early 90s there was a big stink because some people claimed that there were anti-semitic messages coded into wingdings.
Because of all the fuss about secret messages appearing in wingdings, when Microsoft designed the successor to wingdings in the late 90s, Webdings, they deliberately ensured that a happy message would appear when the letters NYC were typed.

Wired News: MS Denies Wingding Thing, Again
Kuresman said Microsoft did consider altering the Wingdings font in the early 1990s, after concerns over the perceived anti-Semitic message first surfaced.
However, the company decided that changing the relationship between letters and images in the font would create too many technical difficulties, including the possibility that users of the original Wingdings would be unable to transfer their work into the newer version, she said.
When Microsoft developed a new graphical font, Webdings, in 1997, Kuresman said typographers took pains to ensure that the image corresponding with the capital letters NYC was a pleasant one.

ADL has dismissed speculation about the Wingdings characters since 1992, when someone initiated a myth that Microsoft Windows 3.1 software contained anti-Semitic messages, including one set of symbols that purportedly spelled out "death to Jews."
Microsoft has been in contact with ADL to debunk another rumor circulating on the Internet that claims a certain character set within Wingdings refers directly to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.
"If one considers that the Wingdings character font was created long before the disaster, this latest urban myth circulated on the Internet falls on its face," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director.
