 Walkabout - Berrima
At the river end of Wilshire St is a track that leads to Lambie's Well, the town's first water supply on the banks of the Wingecarribee.
Not far from Wingecarribee St is a two-storey Georgian building with red brickwork, a verandah and stone lintels which currently houses the Berrima Galleries, specialising in arts and crafts.
The church is built of sandstone quarried from the banks of the Wingecarribee River at the rear of the building.

Wingecarribee Swamp is the largest and best example of a montane peatland in mainland Australia at the relatively low altitude of 680 - 690m.
Wingecarribee Swamp is one of the oldest montane mires known in Australia, an example of a tableland mire that developed since the last glacial when conditions became warmer and wetter (National Trust 1992).
Wingecarribee Swamp is linked with the history of European settlement and agriculture in the district.

The river rises at the foot of Mt Lonarch in the Victorian Central Highlands near the small town of Ampitheatre, and flows north for 270km through Avoca, Charlton, Victoria and Quambatook.
Although the Avoca River Basin is part of the Murray-Darling Basin, the Avoca does not empty into the Murray River.
Although it is the only river of significance in the area, the Avoca has had no major water storages constructed on it, merely six weirs of only local significance.

The highest level was found at the inlets downstream of the Nattai River, which carries effluent from the Mittagong and Moss Vale STPs, and Werri Berri Creek, which has septic seepage flowing into it from the unsewered area of The Oaks and Oakdale.
The Rivers and Foreshores Improvement Act 1948 requires a permit to excavate or remove material in, or within 40 metres of the bank or shore of a river, lake or estuary.

From Wingecarribee Reservoir water can be released into the Wingecarribee River - which flows into the Wollondilly River and Lake Burragorang - feeding the main Sydney supply system via Warragamba Dam.
Wingecarribee Reservoir supplies Bowral and Mittagong via Wingecarribee Shire Council's water filtration plant located next to the reservoir.
Water is also released from Tallowa Dam into the Shoalhaven River to enable the Shoalhaven City Council to extract water from the river to supply Nowra.

The platypuses in the Wingecarribee are the closest large colonies to Sydney.
Dr Grant says this could be a problem for the platypus because high water flows can erode the earth banks, in which they dig their nesting burrows, affect the small bottom invertebrate animals on which they feed and place extra energy demands on their foraging in rapid flows.
One remaining concern is that platypus populations in the Shoalhaven River downstream of Tallowa Dam have been short- changed of their share of water during the recent drought.

Wingecarribee Shire Mayor, Gordon Lewis turned the first sod today to mark the beginning of a $16.1m project to complete a program of works that include a major upgrade of the Bowral Sewage Treatment Plant.
Earlier this year the Council and Sydney Catchment Authority announced the $11.16 million upgrade to the sewage treatment plant following the awarding of a contract to Reed Constructions Australia Pty Ltd to replace a major section of the plant.
Wingecarribee Shire General Manager, David McGowan explained that the Sewage Treatment Plant upgrade will be able to serve a population of up to 14,600.

The Wongawilli seam is accessed by a rail drive and conveyor system that crosses a bridge over the swirling Wingecarribee River in a gorge below and then dives into a small opening in the opposite cliff face.
Horses were used underground until 1968, and it is still possible to see where they were spelled on the surface at weekends and where flsmithing was carried out.
However, there is “nuisance” water during development because the coal seam dips from above the Wingecarribee River at around 2º to well below the riverbed at 150m from surface.

 Temperate Highland Peat Swamps on Sandstone listing advice
These swamps are found in a range of locations in the landscape, from hanging swamps in the Blue Mountains to the valley and watercourse swamps of Wingecarribee Swamp and the Paddy's River Swamps.
Hanging swamps are especially notable in the landscape as they occur on steep valley sides in wet areas created by water exiting the ground at joins between sandstone and claystone layers of rock.
Peat mining in the Wingecarribee Swamp after the impoundment of the lower portion, may have contributed to the collapse of the peat in the remainder of the swamp that has reduced the area of the swamp to approximately 25% of its original extent.

It is important to also mention the Wingecarribee Swamp, which, whilst technically outside my electorate of Southern Highlands, has a big influence on the overall environmental qualities of the electorate.
Apart from the obvious environmental disaster that occurred, the whole Wingecarribee Swamp and its delicate ecosystem is now at risk of bushfire because the peat has dried out and just one spark will cause the whole swamp to go up in flames.

It is a quiet country town of 5690 people (1991 figures) which functions as a service and administrative centre of Wingecarribee Shire.
It became the first European settlement on the Southern Highlands but was never proclaimed, perhaps because the flow of the Wingecarribee was uncertain at the townsite and building material was scarce.
His hut was located adjacent the Wingecarribee River near where the Bong Bong Bridge now stands.

John Oxley himself never lived in the area, sending his sons with herds of cattle to graze on the land after it was granted.
The first hotel (Wingecarribee Inn, 1862) was on the corner of Bong Bong and Boolwey Sts - now gone, but hotels still trade on the locations of others - where the Port O Call (1863 earlier building), and the Blue Boar now stand.
A Police Station was built in Wingecarribee Street in 1887, and a court house (of local trachyte stone) on the corner in 1896.

 Berrima - History
Prior to its establishment Bong Bong, near Moss Vale, was the centre of settlement in the Southern Highlands (1817).
The earliest road south from Sydney passed through present Mittagong and over the east of Mt. Gibraltar (now known as the Old South Road) and across the Wingecarribee River at Bong Bong, then south towards Sutton Forest and Goulburn.
Camping on the banks of the river near the present bridge south of the town, he was impressed by the location, and recommended it as a townsite to the then Governor Bourke.

Although it is unclear precisely how long humans have inhabited the traditional lands of the Gundungurra people including areas now known as the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands and the Goulburn Plains of New South Wales, it is evident that ancestors of the Gundungurra people have been in the region for a long time.

However there are fragments that give glimpses into Gundungurra social life before the appropriation of Gundungurra homelands led to the dislocation and dispersal of Gundungurra bands and the loss of language as well as many aspects of Gundungurra cultural life.

This spraying program is part of a coordinated approach of Wingecarribee Shire Council, the Hawkesbury Nepean Catchment Management Authority, local landholders and Berrima Bushcare Group, to rehabilitate riparian vegetation along the Wingecarribee River from the Berrima weir to Wallaby Rocks.
