  Wings
Usually, when there are airplane scenes in a movie, there is a long shot of flying planes, and then close-ups shot on the ground against the sky (or later, using a projected background).
Wings had a $2 million budget in excess of the military investment and used thousands of soldiers, almost all the existing army pursuit aircraft, and the top rank of military fliers; several of the pilots in Wings became generals in World War II.
Although ostensibly a movie glorifying war and the military, Wings is a reminder at how many victories were won by obedient soldiers marching to certain death towards a barrage of enemy gunfire.

  ‘Wings of Desire’ (PG-13)
Seen through the (fl-and-white) lens of veteran French cinematographer Henri Alekan and reflected in the gentle eyes of Wenders' star angel Bruno Ganz, "Wings" is a soaring vision that appeals to the senses and the spirit.
An intuitively composed fable of earthbound angels in the city of Berlin, "Wings" is closer to poetry and music than linear storytelling anyway: Your senses simply absorb the sounds and images -- although "Wings" is a healthy enough meal for the brain as well.
"Wings," like most Heaven-and-Earth movies, ties up its resolution with romantic ribbons but, in Wenders' eyes, such a conclusion is the crowning union of life's dual opposites, the sensual and the spiritual, German's East and West -- as well as its Nazi past and occupied and uncertain present.

Ningen no Tsubasa (Wings of a Man)
The movie Wings of a Man depicts Shinichi Ishimaru as a hero with ideal character and many accomplishments who gave his life to defend his country.
Wings of a Man is a movie "commemorating the 50th year of the end of the Pacific War and the realization of true peace and prosperity."
Although this clear depiction of good and evil may give children and adults role models to follow, the movie's romantic portrayal of Shinichi and his wife, family, and friends may not allow insight to difficulties faced by some kamikaze pilots and their families.

Viggo Mortensen was terrific as was the always bankable Armin Mueller-Stahl as the "Russian Godfather." Not a big Naommi Watts fan but she was OK as the midwife who comes into possession of a diary that reveals too much of the inner workings of the Russian Mob and their ruthlessness.
A comparison would be interesting, but, as with other comparisons (the latest James Bond movie comes to mind), it would not be entirely fair because so much has changed in 50 years that the films must be seen in different contexts.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: Wings of Desire | Deseret Morning News Web edition
A terse description of "Wings of Desire" makes it sound like any of many movies about heaven and earth: An angel falls in love with a mortal woman and desires to become mortal himself so he can be with her.
It is also a deceptively simple movie, but there's no question that you'll be thinking about it for some time to come.
But those quibbles aside, "Wings of Desire" is uniquely wonderful, with many memorable scenes and Bruno Ganz provides the perfect gentle angel face for Wenders to hold with his camera as both Ganz and Wenders observe humanity.

Wings is primarily famous today as the first-ever Best Picture Oscar-winner, which sounds a bit more impressive than it is, since the awards for 1927-28 seem to have been pitched to give everybody something.
Still, Wings is a good movie, if hardly the best of its year.
True, the gay subtext between Arlen and Rogers was probably accidental (though they undeniably generate more heat together than in their scenes with Clara Bow or Jobyna Ralston), but the inclusion of an obvious lesbian couple in the aforementioned tracking shot is obviously deliberate.
