Wingsuit flying - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A wingsuit is a specially made jumpsuit that has fabric wings between the legs and under the arms.
The wings on a wingsuit are fairly similar to a modern ram air parachute.
Wingsuit flying is one of the few skydiving disciplines that allows skydivers to hear each other talk in freefall.

Parachuting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On a "hop-and-pop," a jump in which the parachute is immediately deployed upon exiting the aircraft, it is not uncommon for a skydiver to be under canopy as high as 4000 or 5000 feet.
Flying the parachute has two basic challenges: to land where planned, often on a target; and to avoid injury.
Skydive disciplines involving equipment such as wing suit flying and sky surfing have a higher risk factor due to the lower mobility of the jumper and the greater risk of entanglement.

Wingsuit flying - Skydiving with a suit which provides extra lift.
In swoop accuracy, the parachutist exits at whatever altitude, flies a zippy, high-aspect-ratio wing to the vicinity of the target, then executes a diving turn that levels out into a long, high-speed swoop, close over the ground.
For example, a large aircraft must be "spotted" (directed to fly over the optimum exit point) by an experienced jumper who is usually a parachute-center staffer.

Wingsuit flies because it IS an AIRFOIL, just like aircraft wing, square canopy or Space Shuttle (actually, by its basic flying form and flying characteristics wingsuit is more comparable to space shuttle then to any other flying object).
The better the ratio between lift and drag, the better flying body is. For a particular aerodynamic shape, this ratio between lift and drag varies with speed.
Also, if you are still thinking of landing the wingsuit, do one normal parachute jump, but when you open the canopy, try to position your body horizontally (can be done by hooking your feet around rear risers) and try to land small elliptical canopy in that position.

Wingsuit malfunctions are a very serious issue because your arms and legs are constricted.
Flying a wingsuit is much different than standing in one.
For wingsuits with large wings, where this is an obvious possibility, you should close your wings, arms all the way extended down then feel your way back up to your BOC.

Wingsuits are technically specialist jumpsuits that have been developed and manufactured with fabric ram air wings located between the legs of the jumper and from each arm to the torso.
Wingsuits must be worn correctly to ensure proper performance during the flight and that safe deployment and emergency procedures can be carried out by the jumper who is wearing the suit.
Once the wingsuit is configured for the remainder of descent and landing (arm and at least one leg wing released), release the brakes for full canopy flight.

The legendary Harry Ward, 'the Yorkshire Birdman', was able to control his freefall, fly his wings in a figure of eight pattern and deploy his canopy in a stable position; Harry survived two seasons before he wisely stopped his birdman flying.
For me, the beauty in flying the wingsuit is the ability to stay in the air for extended periods.
The Birdman wingsuit comes in three designs, which progressively build on the aerodynamic qualities; the Classic for beginners, the Gti for intermediate level, and the Skyflyer for advanced wingsuit flyers.

Volo in wingsuit - Principi di aerodinamica (articolo di R. Pecnik) - Forum Paracadutismo.it
Lift and drag are aerodynamic forces that depend on the shape and size of the flying body, air conditions, and the flight velocity (airspeed).
One is to treat the wingsuit flyer as a regular skydiver and just increase the overall surface area of the suit and design it to look more like a parachute (or flying squirrel).
When discussing all these options, one should never forget that wingsuits also have to be designed in order to allow parachutist for easy deployment of their canopy and use of emergency handles, as well as to be comfortable to wear and fly.
