Born in 1904, Prima's contemporary Wingy Manone began playing trumpet as a kid, but at the age of 10 lost his right arm in a streetcar accident.
Manone's records sold fairly well, and in 1935 he had a hit with "The Isle of Capri." By now, Manone was an established act, and he was able to get well-paying jobs both in New York and on the road.
They're interesting and vigorous examples of early jazz on which Manone produces a nice, mellow tone, although his playing is a little stiff; he loosens up on four 1927 numbers that follow.

Most selections were drawn from the Mosaic set, "The Complete Brunswick and Vocalion Recordings of Louis Prima and Wingy Manone (1924-1937)," Mosaic MD6-217.
I believe I remarked that Wingy shortened his name from "Mannone" to "Manone" in the late 1920s, but it may have been later.
The spelling does not change on the labels of Wingy's records until later - and my sources differ on when this is! To keep things simple and so as not to put any sort of hex on the ole' wingster, we'll show "Manone" on all the small-group titles from 1934 and thereafter.

Although the correct spelling of Wingy's last name is Mannone, he later changed it to Manone (the more common way of spelling it) so therefore you will find the artist credit and the personnel listing in conflict.
Note: In an interview for the jazz journal Playback, Manone states that the trombonist was either Keg Johnson or Claude Jones and the drummer was Sonny Greer.
In the case of Manone, however, we have also included Columbia masters where he is in the role of sideman as well.
