Reading Feminism / Feminist Readings: South Riding by Winifred Holtby   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Holtby summarises these problems in the introduction to Women where she describes a sense of 'uneasiness'[4] about the position of women at the time she was writing.
Holtby considers the idea of a 'common humanity'[18] to be important because she felt that the perceived differences between the sexes led directly to women's weaker and more constrained position within society.
Holtby steadfastly refuses to supply a romantic resolution to the novel, but depicts Sarah as contented at its close because she has learnt to restrain herself through "marriage" to her community, just as assuredly as if she were married to a man.

Winifred Holtby   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Winifred gradually became more critical of the class system and inherited privileges and by the late 1920s was active in the Independent Labour Party.
When Vera Brittain was told by Winifred's doctor that she only had a couple of days to live, she asked Gordon Catlin to talk to Pearson.
The room was dim, with a shaded lamp, but I saw at once that Winifred had changed, and though her pulse was still tolerably strong, she was breathing very shallowly, and wore the look that I had so often seen on the faces of dying men in the War.

Born in 1898, she was the daughter of David Holtby, a Yorkshire farmer, and Alice Winn.
Holtby's health declined in the 1920s, owing to a chronic heart condition, and she succumbed to kidney failure in September 1935, living just long enough to complete her best work, South Riding.
Her relationship with Brittain, who went on to be an author of even greater renown (and also served as Holtby's literary executor), was depicted in the latter's 1940 memoir Testament of Friendship.

Winifred Holtby is usually remembered as the author of South Riding or as the woman immortalised by Vera Brittain in her book, Testament of Friendship.
To confine her life to these two sparse details is to reduce it to the very minimum and to omit so much else of importance and value.
Sadly, it was a life that was ended far too early, at the age of thirty-seven, with her promise only half fulfilled.

Woolf’s interest in Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s reputation as a writer may have been sparked by the biographies of Woolf herself, first published in the early 1930s.

Woolf must have wondered if her own writing would endure or would meet the fate of that of Elizabeth Barrett, whose elopement with Robert Browning seems more memorable to the public than her poetry.
