Winston C. Martindale was born and reared in Jackson, Tennessee.
Nicknamed "Wink" by a boyhood friend, he began working as a radio announcer at the age of 17, while attending Memphis State University from which he earned a Bachelor of Science degree.
In 1957, Martindale recorded the million-selling classic "Deck of Cards" which is still a standard in narrative recordings.

Martindale started his career as a disc jockey at age 17 at WPLI in Jackson, earning $25 a week.
It was at his tenure with WHBQ that Martindale became a close friend of Elvis Presley, and following Presley's sudden death in 1977, Martindale aired a nationwide tribute radio special in his honor.

As I was listening to it, I just had one thought: "Wink's been doing these ads for a while, hasn't he?" And indeed, he has; the "Take on Orbitz" campaign has been going on for over a year now, and it seems to be going strong long past the shelf life of most ad campaigns.
If it weren't for Orbitz, Wink would be relegated to "Where are they now?" tours and judging dog shows.
