 ATSDR - PHA - Asarco Hayden Smelter Site (a/k/a Asarco Incorporated Hayden Plant), Hayden, Gila County, Arizona
The objective of this PHA is to evaluate whether a public health hazard exists as a result of environmental exposures in Hayden and Winkelman, Arizona.
The towns of Hayden and Winkelman consist of homes primarily built during the 1940s and 1950s to accommodate the large worker population needed in the area to operate the Ray open pit copper mine and the copper smelter in Hayden.
In 1999, the Arizona Prevention Center, an affiliate of the University of Arizona (UA) dealing with environmental and occupational issues, and ADHS conducted a health survey of the residents of Hayden and Winkleman to determine childhood blood lead levels and child and adult urinary arsenic levels.
