		Being 'winkte' however, allows me the full capability of achieving a strong ego identity, originality, and an active inner life, which is characteristic of adult individuation and personality development.
		'winkte' are not branded as threats to a rigid gender ideology; but rather, we are considered an affirmation of humanity's original pre-gendered unity - we are representatives of a form of solidarity and wholeness which transcends the division of humans into men and women.
		'winkte' transformation was not, and is not, a complete shift from his or her biological gender to the opposite one, but rather an approximation of the latter in some of its social, and of course today, its physical aspects, effecting an intermediate status that cuts across the boundaries between gender categories.

		Winkte originally refered to a true hermorphidite and had no reference to G/L at all - that use of the word is modern day usage.
		I was taught that a winkte was to be be treated with the respect normally given to any other person - nothing special and certainly no discrimination.
		I was also taught that the Winkte was someone who showed evidence of both sexes...ie, a true hermaphrodite , and because of these differences were regarded as Wakan or "sacred"; and that Winkte's had roles in certain ceremonies.

		Walter Williams (1986, 1991) traces the origin of the word to Arabic (bardash) meaning "kept boy" or "male prostitute." The term was introduced in the New World and found in the Jesuit relations with Natives who observed men dressed as women among the Iroquois.
		Not all Lakota men were expected to go to war; "men who didn't want to go war" were not classified as winkte, because not all were of this third gender.
		Unfortunately, the term "berdache" has also been incorporated in the psychology and women studies domains, so the task for the affected group to purge the term looms large and may be formidable.
