Winkte originally refered to a true hermorphidite and had no reference to G/L at all - that use of the word is modern day usage.
I was taught that a winkte was to be be treated with the respect normally given to any other person - nothing special and certainly no discrimination.
I was also taught that the Winkte was someone who showed evidence of both sexes...ie, a true hermaphrodite , and because of these differences were regarded as Wakan or "sacred"; and that Winkte's had roles in certain ceremonies.

To the contrary they are considered to be people with special spiritual and other talents that fulfill some needs of the community that other people could not fill.
