		The magnificent landscape of Winkworth was begun in 1937 when Dr.Wilfred Fox took the opportunity to acquire a parcel of land from the Fisher-Rowe family - owners of Thorncombe Estate.
		Winkworth is a glorious colourful landscape where you can stroll for endless hours on turf softly carpeted with fallen leaves in hues of green and gold, particularly beautiful are the crimson leaves lying beneath lovely Acers in fading autumnal sunlight.

		We'd include the NT properties at East and West Clandon (there's a good value joint ticket), Denbies vineyard at Dorking, the gardens at Wisley, Brooklands (if you like motor racing), Polesden Lacey nr Great Bookham, Claremont garden at Esher, Loseley House nr Guildford, Winkworth arboretum at Hascombe and Painshill Park at Cobham.
		Some places few people have heard of turn out to be particularly enjoyable: the network of tunnels under Reigate castle grounds, the Watts picture gallery at Compton, Hannah Peschar's sculpture garden at Ockley, the Derby Day Experience in Epsom.Though there are urban corridors, much of the countryside is beautifully preserved, and quite hilly.

		An interesting form of Acer davidii which occurred at Winkworth Arboretum and has attractive bark.
		This tree has large five-lobed leaves turning purplish in autumn.
