Softmodem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Also referred to as a Winmodem because the first commercially available softmodems mostly targeted the Microsoft Windows operating system running on IBM-PC compatibles, although their usage has become more widespread over other operating systems and machines e.g.
Winmodems have earned a certain notoriety for slowing down their computer systems and for having buggy drivers, although this reputation was largely garnered during the period of their introduction to the mass-market, whereupon they were oft to use substandard drivers, and be found in entry-level computers with slow CPUs.
Although "Winmodem" is actually a specific brand of U.S. Robotics modem, the term has now come to mean any software-based modem (in the same way that Xerox refers to any brand of copy machine).

CPU usage with winmodem - OSNN Forum
I know the winmodems are software driven and were CPU hogs, but ding dang that seems kinda high.
You are correct in what you say winmodems use your motherboard's CPU instead of their own chips to run, slowing your system down and causing your games to lag.

Winmodems are meant to be cheap,Voice models will not have a microphone or speaker connector to plug in, they have a TAD connector sometimes on the inside for connection to your soundcard.
If you buy a winmodem, also make sure you know that whenever you connect or disconnect it will lock up your computer for a few seconds, so don't be playing games or burning CD's while you do that.
3Com however does make their winmodems use less CPU than competitors (particularly over HSP software modems) and have less of an impact on games, but still there is extra latency added by the use of the CPU to do the processing.
