Though the lake is special as the last refuge of the cui-ui, Anaho Island within the lake is also a special habitat.
Presently, efforts are underway to attempt to preserve Pyramid Lake and its surroundings in the hopes that the lake doesn't follow in the footsteps of its old neighbor, Lake Winnemucca.

Originally I'd planned on going to Fourth of July Lake, but looking at my topo map, the peak actually looked easier, as it was a rather steep descent to the the lake, and just a short climb to the peak.
A few folks passed us coming down the trail, apparently having fished their fill at the lake, and one group passed us on their way up, but it was otherwise surprisingly un-crowded for late morning on the fourth of July.
After 2.5mi of lovely hiking, we came to gorgeous Winnemucca Lake (and found where all the people had been hiding).

I had been to Kirkwood, Caples Lake, and Carson Pass probably close to a thousand times before my first trip to Woods Lake, which is situated between the three.
It is a lake of great beauty where the drainages from Round Top Lake and Winnemucca Lake meet before heading to Caples.
There is also a trail head for those heading to Winnemucca Lake, Round Top, or the Mokelumne Wilderness in general.

The first mile of the road, crossing two dikes or dams on the south side of the lake, is narrow and curvy, but as you get into fir forest and start climbing the road widens and becomes somewhat straighter.
Beyond the lake you drive for about a mile through forest of pine, fir and aspen; watch for the local forest service campground and a convenient rest area.
The first group are on your side of Winnemucca Lake; the second are in the slopes of the glacial corrie behind it.

Go past Winnemucca Lake, following the main, obvious trail, and continue up to the next lake, which is Round Top Lake.
As an alternate approach to the northwest slopes, one may start from Woods Lake Campground (elevation 8,320+), reached by a signed road, which is 1.8 miles west from Carson Pass, south off Highway 88.
Take trails to either Winnemucca Lake or Round Top Lake to join Route A. The lack of a large, clear, parking area generally discourages all but paying campers to go this way.

Leaving Cupertino at 5.30am, I reached the Woods Lake trailhead by 9.30, despite not speeding (too much) and even including a half-hour stop for breakfast, fuel, and a complimentary car wash (which was long overdue).
I headed up to Winnemucca Lake and then up to Round Top, where I had the great honour of running into Doug Mantle, a name I'd seen in just about every Sierra register in which I've ever looked.
