Naive Stephen Chow is newly arrived in Hong Kong.
His opportunistic uncle quickly discovers that Chow has supernatural powers, such as being able to see through cards and predict the winners of races.
His uncle promptly gets him involved in a high stakes gambling tournament, through which the insouciant Chow blithely sails, until love threatens to deprive him of his powers.

All for the Winner (Chinese: 賭聖 Literal translation: Gambling Saint) is a 1990 Hong Kong comedy directed by Jeff Lau and Corey Yuen.

TAP: Vol 5, Iss. 17. Talent and the Winner-Take-All Society. Robert H. Frank.   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The benefit from having the additional contestant is to raise the expected value of the ultimate winner's performance, since there is always some chance that the entrant will prove superior to the existing contestants.
In an ideal economic world, we would keep sending additional contestants to a winner-take-all market until the expected gain in the value of the winner's performance was just large enough to compensate for what the last contestant could have earned in another occupation.
Because taxing the winners' earnings at a higher rate makes both entry and performance enhancement less attractive, the net effect is to steer marginal resources away from winner-take-all markets into other sectors.

 Winner-Take-All Markets
If a pool of 10 candidates can be expected to yield a chief whose value in the job is $70,000, and a pool of 11 applicants can be expected to yield a winner who provides $72,000 worth of value, it is in the interests of the society to have at least 11 competing.
Hence, if the value of being chief as perceived by the society is not much smaller than the value of being chief as seen by the winner, there will be a tendency for too many candidates to compete for chiefdom.
If the value of the ceremonial chief to society were $10,000,000 but the winner only received a value of $100,000, it is likely that the competition would attract too few rather than too many entrants.

Life is unfair, if we fail to understand and imbibe the simple rule that life always rewards winners exponentially unjustly.....If we do, then we must play to its rules and then suddenly life is fair.
As a child, I grew up listening to Abba, and I remember this lovely song of theirs called "The winner takes it all." No one remembers other groups from that era, we all remember ABBA for being a front runner.
Of course, this song is not about sports but instead about lovey-dovey sentimental losses, but yeah, you could forgive that part of the song...anyways life, love, togetherness.....all have an element of chance, dice and gamesmanship to them.

DVD Talk Review: Stephen Chow's All For The Winner (Uncut Version)
I've found that many Hong Kong comedies are painted with very broad strokes and there are certainly several head-scratchers in All For The Winner, but its focus on aping God Of Gamblers (Chow even watches the film at one point) keeps it firmly grounded.
Chow plays the lowly bumpkin to a tee and his frequent co-star, Ng Man Tat, is hilarious as his scheming Uncle.
While not as razor sharp as his most recent releases, All For The Winner is still a blast and a half.

One major culprit is inherent in mass culture: when millions have a small interest in the winner's performance, however minutely superior to the runner-up's, a large reward goes to that winner (as in a golf tournament).
The reward ratchets upward as the market in question becomes overcrowded with aspiring winners (as in acting), but at the end of the game, the inevitable multitude of losers are left with little reward for their efforts.
As the book goes on, however, it falls into the same pattern of thousands of books before it: the authors have made one important and interesting observation, and they proceed to claim that virtually everything in the world that they disapprove of can be accounted for by this one observation.

The concept of crowdsourcing has been popular lately, but not everything is easily sourced out to the crowd.

 FairVote - The Winner-Take-All Problem
Winner-take-all election systems do nothing to provide representation to any group making up less than half of the population in a given voting district, and the high percentage of the vote needed to win election can be a severe barrier to minority candidates.
Since many areas are dominated by a single political viewpoint, winner-take-all voting systems will often result in no-choice elections where one party has a permanent monopoly on power, and the winner is effectively predetermined.
In the United States, two in five state legislative races go uncontested as a result, and nearly 99% of congressional incumbents win reelection by large margins.
