  Wintel
Wintel is a colloquial, often pejorative, term used to describe industry standard desktop computers of the type commonly used in homes and businesses in the wealthier parts of the world since the late 1980s, which usually combine the Microsoft Windows operating environment system with Intel's x86 processor architecture.
Intel and Microsoft, once the closest of partners, have operated at an uneasy distance from one another since their first major dispute (which was to do with Intel's heavy investment in the 32-bit optimised Pentium Pro and Microsoft's delivery of an unexpectedly high proportion of 16-bit code in Windows 95).
The Wintel platform is the dominant desktop and laptop computer architecture, and has now spread to be a leading architecture in the server space.

The free WinTel 2.1.2 update can now install Microsoft Windows XP in about a tenth of the time previously required, according to company claims.

WinTel includes two underlying "virtual machines" or "emulators": one is "Qemu" which is utilizes some dynamic translation for maximum performance and a slower, more compatible "Bochs," which it says is required at this time to install Windows XP on Intel Macs.

Instead, Wintel proponents are shown as consistently fudging such arguments as rationales for decisions already made.
One of the oddest facts about the Wintel versus Unix (including Linux and the Mac) debate is that the Wintel proponents practically brag about never having actually used Unix while the most committed Mac/Unix advocates have generally used both.
It's true, of course, that Apple's share of new desktop sales runs only a bit over 3 percent right now, but the conclusion these commentators draw from this is wrong because the 3 percent is a measure of revenue dollars to PC sellers, not hours of usage by customers.

Last year we compared the Pismo PowerBook with the high-end Wintel portables and found that the Pismo was the clearly superior market entrant.

The fact that you still can't take fast networking for granted on a Pro-level Wintel portable demonstrates that the PC manufacturers aren't interested in selling you an integrated computing experience; more accurately, they're interested in selling you parts.
