Shorter masts often need no guy lines and usually end up being referred to as a pole, such as a telephone pole (though these often have guy lines) or flag poles.
Much taller mast structures use the mast term (or when there on boats as previously mentioned) with exception of some tower hybrid tower/masts that incorporate elements from both and usually just use the term 'tower'.
Masts commonly have the name of the brodcasting designation that uses them, or somtimes of a nearby city or town.

At 456 metres (1498 feet) above sea level, Winter Hill is the highest point of the area to the west of the Pennines, a line of hills, known as the backbone of England, running roughly north - south between Lancashire and Yorkshire.
Sandstone was quarried from the hill for paving stones, primarily used in Manchester, Salford and Eccles between 1880 and 1920.
Winter Hill is home to a main television transmitter, radiating regional and national TV programmes on the UHF band in 625 line PAL in Nicam digital stereo, relays for national FM stereo radio, regional FM stereo radio and a local FM stereo transmitter.

List of masts - Art History Online Reference and Guide   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
For radio systems in the longwave and mediumwave range the value of the height should be in the range between a sixth and five eighth of the wavelength with favourite values at the quarter or the half of the radiated wavelength.
For high power transmitters in the MW range, masts with lengths around half of the radiated wavelength are preferred because they focus the radiated power better to the ground than constructions with heights of quarter wavelengths, which are preferred of economical reasons for low power medium wave transmitters.
For longwave transmitters, however, the construction of masts with heights of half-wave wavelength is, because of economical reasons (and perhaps problems with the flight safety), in most cases impossible.

A minimum height limit of 300 m is used for practical purposes to keep the list to a reasonable length.
