Lying along the South Winterbourne river, approximately five miles west of the County Town of Dorchester, Winterbourne Abbas is a delightful little village, only spoilt by the never-ending traffic that thunders through it on the main A35 road to Bridport.
Winterbourne Abbas is surrounded by ancient barrows, most notably the Poor Lot group of which some are now no longer apparent having been ploughed to a level well below their original height.
The Lodge is shown on the 1851 census in the occupation of Ann Samways, a widow of 63 and her daughter Mary 28.

 Winterbourne Abbas, Dorset, England
Winterbourne Abbas is situated just south and west of Dorchester, it is natural to find barrows and burial mounds and it is thought that the Romans had a large camp here.
Although there has been a church at Winterbourne Abbas since Saxon times, nothing of that original building remains except the base of the south wall.
The most famous band in the valley was that of Winterbourne St. Martin.

The Civil Parish of Winterbourne situated six miles north of Bristol is in the County of Gloucester and extends three miles from North to South and two miles east to west with an acreage of approximately 3300 acres.
The Parish of Winterbourne is in the Hundred of Langley and Swineshead and comprises the tithings of Winterbourne and Hambrook which are divided by Bradley Brook.
No history of Winterbourne would be complete without special reference to these fairs and the places where they were held (1) near the Parish Church (2) the island in front of the George and Dragon from the 16th Century onwards, when the "new" village of Winterbourne sprang into being.

Another explanation argues that Silbury Hill could have been used as an accurate solar observatory by means of the shadows cast by the mound itself on the carefully levelled plain to the north, towards Avebury.
The meridian line from Silbury runs through Avebury church which stands on a ley line running between Stonehenge and the stone circle at Winterbourne Abbas.
The same ley line also passes through two churches and the eastern slope of Silbury.
