 England - To Hazlitt's Winterslow
Winterslow Hutt is terribly in need of those three coats of paint mentioned in leases, though it would be hardly worth while to paint the tumble-down wooden bay which projects in front of the more durable, but no less weather-worn, building.
No doubt they had expected a sort of guide-book to Winterslow, and I am afraid that a certain local farmer, who was mentioned as desirous of procuring the mysterious volume by this mysterious writer, will change his mind when this disappointing information gets abroad in the district.
Winterslow, I should explain, is on the main road from Exeter to London, and was then a stopping place for mail coaches.

 Winterslow and William Hazlitt
The essayist William Hazlitt (1778-1830) was a frequent visitor to Winterslow and wrote many of his greatest works here, including Characters of Shakespeare’s Plays, Life of Napoleon Bonaparte, The Spirit of the Age, Sketches and Essays and Winterslow: Essays.
They settled at one of her Winterslow cottages from November 1808 until summer 1812 before Hazlitt re-launched his career as a public lecturer, political journalist and critic of drama, poetry and art.
Winterslow inspired him, and provided space for his library, it was the place where he could ‘get through the summer or winter months, without ever knowing what it is to feel ennui.’

The image has a slightly surrealist flavour to it, seen with modern eyes, reminiscent of Giorgio de Chirico or René Magritte in its strange discrepancies of scale (the beaker is little more than eight inches high in reality), its spatial arrangements and the enigma of its meaning.
In his account, Hutchins refers to Winterslow Hut as ‘that well known spot’ and it was, in fact, a staging post on the important turn-pike road from London to Salisbury and the West Country.
The essay was written at Winterslow Hut, 18-19 January 1821. Hazlitt had trained as an artist but made his living as a critic, so the remark is turned as much on himself as on others.

In his time, Winterslow Hut (now the Pheasant Inn) was in the middle of nowhere, something almost impossible to imagine now, given the A30 dual carriageway directly in front of it; as in Hazlitt's time, it is the main road from Salisbury to Andover.
The village of Winterslow, where his wife owned a cottage, is two miles from the Pheasant, at the end of a country lane.
In London, he once said, his writing was "cramped and dry; in Winterslow, it flows like a river, and overspreads its banks".
