Winwick Hall opened in 1897 and Winwick Asylum - later Winwick Hospital - opened in 1902 at a cost of £383,000.
In 1940 a separate unit - Delph Hospital - was built on the opposite side of the A49 to house tubercular patients, becoming an admissions unit in the late 60s, and this still exists as a private hospital.
Winwick Hospital itself saw many changes over the years, particularly in the 1960s following the 1959 Mental Health Act, and had moved from its original largely custodial role to a more enlightened treatment-orientated one.

The Bishop was Rector of Winwick when the fall of the chantries took place in 1553, and William Stanley was returned as being the priest then serving the rector's, or perhaps more properly Lord Derby's chantry, as being founded under his will with an endowment of £3 0s.
It would almost seem from this that to his other preferments he had added a stall at Durham, if not he was only imitating a number of the beneficed clergy of his time who absented themselves from their livings that they might be more free to enjoy themselves.
Sherlock died at Winwick on the 20th June, 1689, and was buried in the chancel of the church.

I was one of the many nurses at the hospital, trained there, spent a large part of my working life on the wards, and latterly took part in the extension of the work of the hospital into the wider community.
The material here is only a fragment of the history of Winwick Hospital, and reflects the latter days when psychiatry was more enlightened than when the hospital began.
It is sad to say that reflections on the earlier days of the hospital are largely unrecorded, although anecdotal evidence may serve to bridge a little of that gap.

Presented to the living of Winwick by Edward, third Earl of Derby, on the 10 Apr 1552, and paid his first fruits the same year.
In 1563 the parish registers commence, and the name of Andrew Rider, the curate, appears in them as having made the first, and a little later the Bishop's monogram and autograph may be seen in some of them.
He is said to have had in his possession a very ancient painting of the face of our Blessed Lord, which was taken by him to Douglas in the Isle of Man, where it is still preserved.

A local legend tells how the site of St Oswald's church, Winwick, was decided by a pig that carried and laid the foundation stones where the church was subsequently built!
An inscription in the church commemorates King Oswald of Northumbria, a prominent Christian, who is said to have been killed here in 642.
If the pig is in its original place it may have accompanied a statue of St Anthony.

All traces of Winwick finally disappeared in 2000 when the former site was covered by executive housing.
Towards its end Winwick had acute and long stay wards and provided mental health care to the people of Warrington, parts of St.Helens, Widnes, Runcorn, Frodsham and Helsby.
The hospital was sited by the A49/M62 roundabout hard by the village of Winwick.
