		The metals suitable for wire, possessing almost equal ductility, are platinum, silver, iron, copper, aluminium and gold; and it is only from these and certain of their alloys with other metals, principally brass and bronze, that wire is prepared.
		Wire is usually drawn of cylindrical form; but it may be made of any desired section by varying the outline of the holes in the draw-plate through which it is passed in the process of manufacture.
		Wire has to be pointed or made smaller in diameter at the end before it can be passed through the die; the pointing is done by hammering, filing, rolling or swaging in dies, which effect a reduction in diameter.

		Wire is a British punk/experimental rock band formed in 1976 by Graham Lewis (bass, vocals), Bruce Gilbert (guitar), Colin Newman (vocals, guitar) and Robert Gotobed (drums).
		Their sound is often associated with a vague subgenre of punk called art punk or post-punk, mostly due to their richly detailed and atmospheric sound, often obscure lyrical themes and, to a lesser extent, their situationist political stance.
		Like The Velvet Underground, Wire are a band whose influence has outshone their (comparatively modest) record sales by some distance.

		Wire formed in 1976, getting their first break by being offered two nights at the Roxy, at a time when all the gigs there were being recorded for a future live album.
		Wire began 1988 with the release of the 'Kidney Bingos' single in February, a blissful yet wryly humorous pop moment that cleared the decks once more for the release of May's 'A Bell Is A Cup Until It Is Struck' LP.
		Wire's 'Peel Sessions' were released by Strange Fruit in 1996, and finally, this April, Colin Newman, who said in 1992 that he was "surprised that no-one's done one of these cover albums of us," was rewarded with 'Whore', the tribute album.

		A testament to Wire at their most uncompromising is found on the oldest of the present crop of Mute's re-releases -- Document and Eyewitness -- a collection of live recordings that capture the inglorious end of the band's first creative phase.
		Although the CD features Wire in a relatively conventional mode on tracks culled from 1979 performances in Montreux (opening for Roxy Music) and at the Notre Dame Hall, the centerpiece of this album is the bizarre set recorded on February 29th, 1980, at London's Electric Ballroom.
		The closest Wire came to reaching a popular audience, in the United States at least, was an ill-advised spot opening for Mute label-mates Depeche Mode in front of tens of thousands of teens at the Rose Bowl in June 1988.
