Wire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The metals suitable for wire, possessing almost equal ductility, are platinum, silver, iron, copper, aluminium and gold; and it is only from these and certain of their alloys with other metals, principally brass and bronze, that wire is prepared.
Wire is usually drawn of cylindrical form; but it may be made of any desired section by varying the outline of the holes in the draw-plate through which it is passed in the process of manufacture.
Wire has to be pointed or made smaller in diameter at the end before it can be passed through the die; the pointing is done by hammering, filing, rolling or swaging in dies, which effect a reduction in diameter.

Wire (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wire is a British punk/experimental rock band formed in 1976 by Graham Lewis (bass, vocals), Bruce Gilbert (guitar), Colin Newman (vocals, guitar) and Robert Gotobed (drums).
Their sound is often associated with a vague subgenre of punk called art punk or post-punk, mostly due to their richly detailed and atmospheric sound, often obscure lyrical themes and, to a lesser extent, their situationist political stance.
Like The Velvet Underground, Wire are a band whose influence has outshone their (comparatively modest) record sales by some distance.

 Wire
Wire formed in 1976, getting their first break by being offered two nights at the Roxy, at a time when all the gigs there were being recorded for a future live album.
Wire began 1988 with the release of the 'Kidney Bingos' single in February, a blissful yet wryly humorous pop moment that cleared the decks once more for the release of May's 'A Bell Is A Cup Until It Is Struck' LP.
Wire's 'Peel Sessions' were released by Strange Fruit in 1996, and finally, this April, Colin Newman, who said in 1992 that he was "surprised that no-one's done one of these cover albums of us," was rewarded with 'Whore', the tribute album.

Wire: reissues - PopMatters Music Review
A testament to Wire at their most uncompromising is found on the oldest of the present crop of Mute's re-releases -- Document and Eyewitness -- a collection of live recordings that capture the inglorious end of the band's first creative phase.
Although the CD features Wire in a relatively conventional mode on tracks culled from 1979 performances in Montreux (opening for Roxy Music) and at the Notre Dame Hall, the centerpiece of this album is the bizarre set recorded on February 29th, 1980, at London's Electric Ballroom.
The closest Wire came to reaching a popular audience, in the United States at least, was an ill-advised spot opening for Mute label-mates Depeche Mode in front of tens of thousands of teens at the Rose Bowl in June 1988.

What band would be willing to then walk away from the zenith of their popularity, claiming they simply didn't have another album in them, only to resurface six years later in 1987 for a string of highly dubious (but not hopeless) new-wave castaways?
Wire's not messing around, though-- naked, venomous aggression and robotic rhythms fuse momentously with six strings' worth of their patented alien sounds.
Initially, Wire's newfound rage may be off-putting to those fans whose fondest memories of the band are from pop-informed pleasantries like "Map Ref 41N 93W" or "The 15th".

Chairs Missing and 154 saw Wire move through post-punk and new wave to a kind of psychedelic pop—lyrics becoming increasingly diverse, intricate and obscure, pieces becoming fractured, dissonant and beautiful all at once.
The band exploded in 1980, producing Document and Eyewitness, which is akin to a musical car crash.
Wire Mail Order also appeared during this time, offering a rare glimpse of an alternative Wire with the likes of archive material such as Pre>He, rare tracks on Coatings, and the very first Wire tribute album, Whore.

The biggest surprise, however, was that Wire — a band that rarely played material live once it had appeared on record — drew its set almost completely from its first three albums.
Wire of the '80s had suggested that rock was dead and that dance music was the future; this full-on assault is a definite return to rock, albeit played and recorded with the latest digital tools.
The notion that Gilbert was Wire's guitar hero is a fallacy; he always played the role of the artistic wrench in the works, giving the project of the moment a perverse twist.

The plan was to shoot a behind-the-music for the world's biggest metal band -- possibly to regain fans lost in the Napster backlash of 2000, which included Ulrich testifying before the U.S. Congress -- to stir interest in the new album.
Also of particular interest is the band's sit-downs with therapist Phil Towle, who is there to more or less smooth over the sweltering egos of the stubborn Hetfield and the artsy Ulrich.
At one point, the band sits down with former guitarist Dave Mustaine, who was kicked out of the band in 1983 and would go on to form rival metal group Megadeth.

The sad reality about the AM band is that there are only a few stations in most markets that are truly profitable or that can deliver significant listener support.
If there is a viable future for the AM band, it will be dependent on a sweeping initiative to clean it up and thin the herd so that the stronger members can improve and become better prepared for survival.
But the band would be better served if most could simply go dark, turn in their licenses and receive some form of meaningful compensation, perhaps from other station owners who would benefit by then being able to expand their own coverage areas.

The Outdoor Miner single was poised to be Wire's breakthrough song in their native England in 1979 until the British Market Research Bureau, compilers of the BBC charts, withdrew the single on allegations EMI had improperly hyped the single's sales.
As a result, Wire narrowly missed appearing on the influential Top Of The Pops television program, and remained a band with credible cult status but no hit records.
Choosing a single Wire song for this novel project is particularly apt in light of the band's 1991 album The Drill — which contains nine reworkings of the title track.
