Wired (magazine) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wired has both been admired and disliked for its strong libertarian principles, its enthusiastic embrace of techno-utopianism, and its sometimes experimental layout with its bold use of fluorescent and metallic inks.
The magazine was founded by American journalist Louis Rossetto and his partner Jane Metcalfe in 1993 with initial backing from software entrepreneur Charlie Jackson and industry pundit Nicholas Negroponte of the MIT Media Lab, who was a regular columnist for six years, through 1998.
The fortune of the magazine and allied enterprises corresponded closely to that of the dot-com boom.

Louis Rossetto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wired was greatly admired for its bold design and its coverage of "digital culture".
The magazine exuded a counterculture ethos -- and was even compared to Rolling Stone as a barometer of the zeitgeist of the era.
Since Wired, Rossetto has mostly avoided the public eye, although he assisted with a 2001 redesign of Reason Magazine and defended the invasion of Iraq in its pages.

WIRED is all about the "optimism meme" and is committed to catalyzing the creation of a "better world" - at least for the 5% of the population who are expected to comprise the new Information Age rulers.

 Salon 21st | Let's Get This Straight
The Wired empire reached its high-water mark in the summer of 1996, when Rossetto attempted to take the company public twice -- but failed to persuade Wall Street that it was worth valuations in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
The problem for Wired back then was that it was perceived as a print publishing house with a trendy magazine in tow that expected, arrogantly and unreasonably, to be valued by the astronomical formulas being applied to hot Internet public offerings like Netscape's.
Wired Digital has been selling lots of ads -- it reported $3.4 million revenue in the first quarter of 1998 and says it expects to be profitable by the fourth quarter.

SEATTLE (Reuters) — Wired magazine is planning to publish the underlying code for the Slammer worm that slowed Internet traffic to a crawl in January, raising questions over whether such articles inspire future hackers or educate potential victims.
The article, which will be published in Wired's July issue due out Tuesday, details how the Slammer worm, also known as "SQL Slammer", spread rapidly through the Internet on Jan. 25, shutting down Internet service providers in South Korea, disrupting plane schedules and knocking out automatic teller machines.
Experts noted that the article does not provide details on how to plant the worm, or how to erase any trace of doing so, which would be the most important step for a malicious hacker who wanted to avoid being caught.
