Wire frame model - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A wire frame model is a visual presentation of an electronic representation of a three dimensional or physical object used in 3D computer graphics.
Using a wire frame model allows visualization of the underlying design structure of a 3D model.
Since wireframe renderings are relatively simple and fast to calculate, they are often used in cases where a high screen frame rate is needed (for instance, when working with a particularly complex 3D model, or in real-time systems that model exterior phenomena).

 Building the wireframe model
The wireframe model represents the shape of the model as a triangle mesh.
The model is stored as a triangle mesh and a technique known as decimation is used to allow the number of triangles in the mesh to be varied interactively.
Moving the slider to the left decreases the model's polygon count (reducing the definition of a model), whereas moving the slider to the right increases the model's polygon count (improving the definition of a model).

 Wireframe Models
The wireframe model is perhaps the oldest way of representing solids.
A wireframe model consists of two tables, the vertex table and the edge table.
If wireframe models (usually including its face information) are available, one can easily obtain a general feeling of the final result without waiting for minutes or even hours before spotting a design flaw.

Besides the 2D modeling of an object in all new CAD systems a 3D model can be constructed enabling the user to view the object from all kind of different views, zoom on details, perform various engineering analyses such as stress, thermal and mass properties calculations as illustrated in figure 1.1.
Due to the fact that wireframe models have no perception of solid shape, visible and hidden lines cannot be distinguished causing a confusing effect of interpreting a 3D view in many ways.
In addition 3D models, modeled on such modelers can be used in combination with other computer programs which are specialized on models presentation and thus provide the image of an object as this will exist in real life as illustrated in fig 1.3.

 Week8 - Basic Three-Dimensional Modeling
There are no surfaces in a wireframe model; it consists only of points, lines, and curves that describe the edges of the object.
NOTE: Because each modeling type uses a different method for constructing 3D models and editing methods vary in their effect on the different model types, it is recommended that you not mix modeling methods.
Limited conversion between model types is available from solids to surfaces and from surfaces to wireframes; however, you cannot convert from wireframes to surfaces or from surfaces to solids.

The goal of this project is to automatically convert a wireframe model (i.e., a set of curve segments in 3D space) into a surface model representing either a boundary of a solid or a sheet of surface.
Therefore, the use of a wireframe model is limited although it can be inputted and editted more easily than surface or solid models.
