Wirksworth is one of the stations, appointed by the new Boundary Act, for receiving votes at the election of knights of the shire to represent the southern division of the county.
In Wirksworth are several genteel residences, and in the neighbourhood are Willersley castle, the seat of Richard Arkwright, Esq.

The arrival of the railway in Wirksworth, in 1867, which linked the town with Derby and the rapidly expanding railway network beyond, opened the way for the easy distribution of limestone which was in great demand.

Wirksworth is where I spent alot of time and would love to ride the train, my, brother worked for British Rail all his life and my nephew has worked for them all his life.
The Wirksworth Railway is not intending to be a preserved steam railway, its object is to provide a local daily passenger service for Wirksworth people and visitors, to Duffield, with a connection to Derby and the North.
On a visit to the Duffield wirksworth line about a year before the announcement that the line was going to be re opened it has surprised me to see people walking down to the railway with wheelbarrows and tipping their rubbish near the crossing and surrounding area.

In the early Saxon times the manor belonged to the Abbey of Repton, but was conveyed by the Abbess Kenwara, in 835, to Humbert, on his engaging to furnish lead to the value of £15 annually to Archbishop Ceolnothbad for the use of Christ's Church, Canterbury.
The town of Wirksworth, which, in 1861, bad 2,692 inhabitants, is situated in a valley at the southern extremity of the mining district.
It is well paved and lighted with gas, and is supplied with water conducted in pipes from the hills on its eastern side.

 The Wirksworth Stone
The Wirksworth Stone was the lid of stone vault found buried in front of the alter of Wirksworth Church in 1820.
It is difficult to assign a date to the Wirksworth Stone, but it is almost certainly from the Anglo Saxon period.
Today it is set on view in a wall of the church interior, as is a crude but effective carving of a medieval lead miner.

Wirksworth is located at the southerly end of the exposure of Carboniferous limestone that forms the uplands of the Peak district and the great fold of the Pennine Chain and the high lands of Lancashire and Yorkshire
Although mineral extraction has been an important part of Wirksworth's existence it was lead mining that was the driving force from Roman times up to the nineteenth century, it was mainly on a non industrial scale around Wirksworth and many miners spent part of the year on smallholdings.
Although it was usual for lines to be built in the nineteenth century to tap a mineral resource this was not the case at Wirksworth, the line primarily being seen as a route to the north to thwart another plan by the LNWR (this is covered at length in Howard Sprenger's book 'The Wirksworth Branch').

The historic town of Wirksworth lies in the Honor of Tutbury, confiscated from the rebel Earl of Derby and given to Edmund, 1st Earl of Lancaster, in 1265.

This Fogg family is found at Wirksworth, Derbyshire, from the beginning of the seventeenth century, the name first appearing in the parish register in 1613.
She, as “Lydia, wife of William Fogg of Cromford,”; was buried 29 April 1804, also in Wirksworth churchyard, no age at death being given in the record.
They are found in the 1861 census at Wirksworth Road, his occupation being given as laborer on a railway; also in the household are his children Hannah (aged 22) [clearly the same child as the “Rebecca” of 1851] and James (aged 21), and their son Joseph (aged 8).
