  introduction
Wirt Clinton Rowland was born to Clinton Charles and Melissa Ruth Rowland on December 1, 1878.
Rowland attended Clinton Public Schools, and was active in his family’s church, the First Congregational Church of Clinton, where his natural musical talents were developed as he sang in the choir, learned to play the organ, and was involved in many concerts and recitals.
Rowland combined this with polychromed terra cotta and brightly glazed Pewabic Tile, and as a result the exterior of the building is ablaze in texture and color.

Wirt Rowland was a warm-hearted man of humor and intelligence, but he did have his quirks.

One of the tragedies of Rowland's career is that the Depression cut short almost all construction work for more than a decade.
