WisCon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WisCon, the Wisconsin Science Fiction Convention, is generally acknowledged as the world's leading feminist-oriented science fiction convention and conference.
Broad Universe, an organization with the primary goal of promoting science fiction, fantasy, and horror written by women, also originated in a discussion at a prior WisCon; as did the Carl Brandon Society, which is dedicated to addressing the representation of people of color in science fiction, fantasy and horror.
WisCon 30 (May 26-29, 2006) was an anniversary Wiscon, and many previous Guests of Honor attended.

 30 May 2006: WisCon 30
Also, this was the biggest WisCon ever, at 1000 people (hitting the concom's membership cap); although I don't mind big cons, that's a lot of people to cram into the Concourse Hotel, and I find I need to take breaks to be by myself from time to time and recover from people overload.
I admit that despite WisCon being a feminist SF convention, I don't attend for the feminist content.
The parties I wanted to attend were mostly backloaded to Sunday night, but I had a lot of fun at the LiveJournal party, meeting a few new people and seeing a number of people I knew, like Cliff and Agent Xpndble.

 Lorem Ipsum: WisCon report (long)
My first WisCon, a few years back, was amazing; the beyond-GLBT-101 panel was mind-expanding; people in panels and in the hallways were saying things I’d never heard anyone say, rich and complex conversations that were careful to avoid knee-jerk reactions or bashing anyone, that took different perspectives into account and didn’t stop at simple answers.
So far as Wiscon was concerned, I did notice that just about *everyone* was attacking politics, but I didn't think of it as exclusionary (probably because I share similar beliefs) so much as preaching to the choir/beating a dead horse.
I've got a whole set of theories about the problem (the WisCon panel problem in the context of a larger social problem), theories worked out mostly through long conversations with Matt (who gets even more worked up about the problem than I do), but the theories continue to not be succintly articulated.

Whatever: All The Cool People at Wiscon
Wiscon is a feminist SF convention and it has an academic streak as well, so many of the attendees look (and are) like grad students, professors and the like (writers by and large have a closely-related look to these) as opposed to the "traditional" con look -- although there's a lot of that, too.
Re: Wiscon -- this was my first too, but my impression taking to folks was that indeed, this was a fairly average Wiscon in terms of quality of panels/readings, which means good things for the convention in general.
I did think this was a fairly average WisCon overall, in terms of programming and so on (it's my fifth consecutive one), but the number of interesting people just gets higher every year.

Robin McKinley: The Wrong Speech (Wiscon 2005)
I would have made an exception for Wiscon, I think, because Wiscon is Wiscon and as anyone who has read some of my web site or heard me speak before knows, the fact that my books seem to be full of women and female creatures doing things and having adventures is not an accident.
But I'm generally sympathetic to Wiscon's idea that while we were all created equal certain subdivisions of said equality need to band together occasionally and do bolstering exercises with others of the same persuasions, and feminism is definitely one of my persuasions.
I had told my minder here at Wiscon that I have to be able to pick up my email every day — never mind contact with my husband; my clients have to know that I'll get back to them within 24 hours.
