Wisden - 2006 - How the Ashes infiltrated the language
Cricket writing is full of the same old phrases.
Cricket has long provided the wider English language with a fair smattering of hackneyed phrases.
In 2005 that sort of cricketing cliché made a spectacular comeback: indeed, the frequency with which the game's lexicon was pillaged by outsiders surely broke all records.

Wisden Cricketers' Almanack - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wisden Cricketers' Almanack (often referred to simply as Wisden or colloquially as 'the Bible of Cricket') is by far the best known reference book concerned with the sport of cricket and probably the most famous reference book about any sport published in the United Kingdom.
It was founded in 1864 by the English cricketer John Wisden (1826-1884), and its annual publication has continued uninterrupted to the present day, making it the longest running sports annual in history.
Wisden is a small-paged but very thick book (over 1500 pages in modern editions) with a distinctive bright yellow cover that it has carried since 1938 – in previous years, covers varied between yellow, buff and salmon pink.

His death was not immediately noticed in cricket circles as members of the Garrick club assumed he was sleeping off another of his legendary lunches.

And Wisden tells the story of the big new betting craze, the inside story from a Test match dressing-room and the why village cricket is splitting in two.
And Wisden seems to encapsulate that, wrapping it up neatly in that famous little yellow jacket: the records and score cards from last year, whether Test, County, one day or five; the analysis, the succinct encapsulation of another year's cricket...

He commented that, unlike baseball, cricket does not have a hall of fame, though inclusion as one of the five Wisden cricketers of the year is tantamount to receiving such an honour.
Sir Alec Bedser was one of the chosen five in 1947, Doug Insole was honoured in 1956, Ted Dexter in 1961, Brian Taylor in 1972, Neil Foster from 1988 and Michael Atherton of 1991 vintage.
Bearing in mind that cricket had its roots nourished as a country pursuit, it seems somewhat incongruous that such a venerable publication as Wisden should be promoting such changes, but it is a publication that has often moved quicker than the game itself.

Edited by John Stern, it blends the traditional strengths of The Cricketer, with its coverage of grassroots cricket as well as the international and county scene, with the lively comment and design of Wisden Cricket Monthly.

Wisden represents something of a constant in a rapidly changing cricketing world.
In the 2001 Almanack, alongside the usual welter of information and statistics, focus falls on the match-fixing scandals that have blighted the game over the last year or so, and, on a related theme, the need for the world game's governing body, the ICC, to adopt a stronger stance on major issues.
As usual Wisden is unmissable - the complete record of last year and (I write on the first day of the county championship) a foretaste of the delights of the English 'summer' to come.
