Nipple - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The physiological purpose of nipples is to deliver milk produced in the female mammary glands during lactation to the infant.
Embryologically, nipples develop along the 'milk lines' which in humans extend from the axilla (armpit) down to the pubis (groin) on both sides.
This, called "witches' milk", is caused by maternal estrogens acting on the baby and is quite normal.

Endotext.com - Endocrinology of Pregnancy, Normal Mammary Development and Disorders of Breast Development and Function
Interestingly, extra nipples and mammary tissue almost always form along the embryonic milk or nipple lines and thus are located along a curved line extending from the axilla to the inguinal ligaments bilaterally 82.
Milk secretion may be spontaneous and copious, or it may be minimal and require expression from the breast to be detected.
Although the presence of milk secretion as opposed to other types of breast discharge is usually obvious, the type of fluid can be verified by microscopic examination.

 Northvegr - Grimm's TM - Chap. 34
Witches can kill men by dealing pricks to images or puppets; in churchyards they dig up the bodies of young children, and cut the fingers off; (71) with the fat of these children they are supposed to make their salve.
The same witch as set the 'holden' on a man must take them off again; when she wants them, she goes into the wood and shakes them off the trees, or digs them out from under the elder (the elves' grave).
When witches fly out by night, they shine like fire, their meeting-place is a thrashing floor (guvno), and each when starting from her kitchen anoints herself with a salve, and repeats a spell which will be quoted further on.

Milk remaining in the alveoli is gradually reabsorbed and the alveoli collapse or rupture.
In mature milk the highest prolactin concentration is in the foremilk.
Milk is made at a local level dependent on the number of prolactin receptor sites laid down during the endocrine stage.

These alternatives have several drawbacks: no formula has the same composition as breast milk, bottle-fed infants may be deprived of a nurturing contact with their mothers, and, particularly in less developed countries, formula-feeding may be associated with increased exposure to infection and inadequate provision of nutrients.
The major lipid of milk, triglyceride, is synthesized in the mammary alveolar cell from free fatty acids and glycerol.
There is growing evidence that the volume of milk produced by women is primarily a function of infant demand and is unaffected by maternal factors such as nutrition, age, parity (except at very high parities).

Food and nutrition bulletin - Volume 17, Number 4, December 1996
It was observed that a mammary band (milk streak) appeared as a raised portion of ectoderm on either side of the midline, extending from the axilla to the groin of the human embryo by about the fourth week of intrauterine life.
During the lactation cycle, there is further growth of the breast (mammogenesis), the initiation of milk synthesis and secretion (lactogenesis 1 and lactogenesis 2), lactation (galactopoiesis), regression of the breast during and after weaning (involution), and relative quiescence during subsequent menstrual cycles.
Milk "coming in," which is sensed by mothers as a sudden enlargement of their breasts with milk, is a post-lactogenesis 2 event occurring two to three days after delivery [42].

Nipple is, generally, the name given to the mammalian nipple, or to things resembling it, such as the tip of an artificial teat or the tip of a grease secreting mechanism in machinery.
The physiological purpose of nipples is to deliver milk during lactation by the female.
Mammalian infants have a rooting instinct for seeking the nipple, and a sucking instinct for extracting milk; in humans, this is called breastfeeding.

Milk is the only natural food for an infant during the first five to six months of life.

The basic component of the breast lobule is the hollow alveolus or milk gland lined by a single layer of milk-secreting epithelial cells.
A few days after birth, the breast occasionally demonstrates its functional capacity by secreting witches milk which is due to elevated prolactin in the newborn.
Glands are distributed along the axillalinguinal embryonic milk line (rat and pig)and restricted to the thoracic region (man, gorilla, elephant), abdominal region (whales, seals),and inguinal regions (horses and cows) in other species.

Occasionally, a male baby is born with enough of his mother's estrogen in his body to produce a bizarre phenomenon known as "witches' milk," with the male glands, suitably stimulated, pumping away at the moment of birth.
