Saul and the Witch of Endor
FOJ had undertaken a study of the case of the spirit of the witch of Endor, and requested additional research from Charles Strong for his analysis of the rather curious situation as presented between Saul and the witch of Endor in I Samuel chapter 28.
But since Saul had previously been instrumental in eliminating witches and wizards from the land, and even though Saul was in disguise, the witch at Endor was hesitant to help, thinking that a snare was being cast to expose her.
The witch was startled by the sudden appearance of Samuel in place of the familiar spirits with whom she was used to dealing.

Witch of Endor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Witch of Endor: from the frontispiece to Sadducismus Triumphatus by Joseph Glanvill
In the Hebrew Bible, the Witch of Endor of the First book of Samuel, chapter 28:4–25, was a witch, a woman "who possesses a talisman", through which she called up the ghost of the recently deceased prophet Samuel, at the demand of King Saul of Israel.
The tale of the Witch of Endor is likely the inspiration for the name of Endora, Samantha's mother on the TV series Bewitched.

Like the witch, I cry: "Why have you set a trap for my life to bring about my death?" One of the men assures me that he is just there for a toothache and bids me do my job.
And it does not suggest that the witch is a ministering angel; it establishes that she is a clever, capable, determined woman.

Assuring her that she would not be punished for practicing her forbidden profession, he requested that she bring up the prophet Samuel from the dead.
The witch followed Saul's instructions, but rather than using the tricks of her trade to deceive Saul, she herself was shocked to see an old man appear, whom Saul identified as Samuel!
Samuel proceeded to remind King Saul that the kingdom had been taken from him because of his disobedience in the Amalekite war, and then foresaw Israel's defeat and the deaths of Saul and his sons at the hands of the Philistines.

Then Saul said to his servants, "Find me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her." And his servants said to him, "In fact, there is a woman who is a medium at En Dor" (vv:4-7).
The rest of the chapter records the actual seance in which the witch at Endor conjured up the spirit of Samuel the prophet, who told Saul that the next day his army would be defeated by the Philistines and that he and his sons would be killed.
The significant thing to notice in this story is not the absurdity of the writer's apparent belief that a medium actually conducted a seance in which she conjured up the spirit of a dead man but his obvious disagreement with the Chronicle writer's version of Saul's death.

 The Witch of Endor
When discussing the state of the dead, that the dead are really dead and not in heaven, hell, or purgatory, the case of the Witch of Endor may be presented as proof that people don't really die, that they continue in some conscious state even after death.
So based on what the witch said, Saul presumed it was Samuel who he was communicating with, that Samuel had been summoned from the grave to speak with him, since the witch said she could see Samuel coming up from out of the earth (not down from heaven).
King Saul was looking for help from the witch of Endor, to contact someone in the grave, a dead Samuel, so that he could know from God how he could gain a victory over the Philistines.

Saul and the Witch at Endor
It would appear, then, that indeed the witch, by her séance, and occult practice, was able to bring up Samuel, or at least his “spirit,” to speak to king Saul!
Obviously, therefore, on this occasion God allowed the spirit of Samuel to return from its abode with the dead, and to visit Saul, when the witch at Endor sought to contact him.
Even though the vast majority of mediums and witches practice the art of deception, and prevaricate when they attempt to communicate with the dead, such powers may have existed long ago, or when very evil men gave themselves over to Satanic and demonic activity.

the Witch of Endor - ForumGarden
There is a very interesting story in the bible that concerns a certain witch that King Saul went to consult, before his battle with the Philistines.
What I find so interesting, is that the witch was SUCCESSFUL in calling up the spirit of Samuel, the prophet.
The witch conjured the likeness of Samuel, and we know that the devil can change his appearance (note in the garden he was a serpent), and a likeness of Samuel does not the real thing make.

Since Saul had to ask the witch what she saw, it’s clear that Saul “perceived” this by simply thinking that it was Saul, as his visual senses were not involved.
However, more probably the witch acted as a proxy for the apparition, however this is conjectural.

A Halloween Tale: Consulting the Witch at Endor - Chuck Missler - Koinonia House
One of the strangest episodes recorded in the Word of God is King Saul's consulting a witch (after having ostensibly cleansed the land of Israel from this occultic practice).  The Halloween holiday seems like an appropriate time to review the implications of this puzzling tale.
Saul inquired of the Lord, but the heavens were silent.  God did not respond by dreams as He had to Joseph, or by the Urim and Thummim as He had to the high priest, or by prophetic revelation as He had with Samuel.
With the heavens silent, Saul sought out a medium to enable him to determine the outcome of the battle with the PhilistinesSaul was informed by his servants that at Endor, between Mount Tabor and the Hill of Moreh, there lived a medium who had escaped his previous purges.

I would begin by saying that I don't believe the vision that appeared to Saul through the Witch of Endor was really Samuel.
Although we are not told specifically that the Witch of Endor was using the power of Satan to do her "consulting of the dead", we are told that she was "possessed" with a "familiar spirit", i.e., a demon, and by the scriptures quoted and many others, we know such things DO NOT come from God.
Perhaps He controlled the vision that Saul saw, but I think it more likely that the demon in the Witch of Endor took delight in taunting Saul, the King of Israel.
