Witchboard (1985), written and directed by Kevin Tenney, presents the notion that the Ouija board is actually a link to supernatural, even a portal at times, and what happens when a particularly nasty spirit decides to try and make use of the portal.
You've got: some great/fantastic kills, a witchboard which is a transmitter to ghosts and demons and ultimately a window for possession of one of the main characters by a demon named Malfador.
In short, "Witchboard" delivers an interesting storyline/plot, suspense which carries the viewer to and through the climax, a couple of great kills, solid characters and an evil and mysterious villain which is based in the supernatural.

 ‘Witchboard’ (R)
There's much more suspense on "Wheel of Fortune" than in "Witchboard," a thrill-an-hour distraction that promises much more than it delivers.
It's not as if the idea of a misbehaving Ouija board doesn't hold some potential on the spook-and-spell front, but first time writer-director Kevin S. Tenney, a recent grad of the UCLA film school, hasn't the faintest idea of how to write a story or direct a film.
His notion of spookiness is doors slamming shut and the board's planchette circling the alphabet.

LOVE TRIANGLE IN 'WITCHBOARD' - New York Times
Any movie that features a Ouija - or ''witchboard,'' as we're told it's sometimes called - as a way for spirits to enter this world ought to offer the audience some guesswork.
This film is so cheaply made that its grand special effect has a knife fly through the kitchen, and a conveniently open bottle of ketchup tips itself over; the ketchup drips on the knife to resemble blood, which the astute Linda takes as a bad sign.
WITCHBOARD, directed and written by Kevin S. Tenney; director of photography, Roy H. Wagner; edited by Daniel Duncan and Stephen J. Waller; music by Dennis Michael Tenney; produced by Gerald Geoffray; released by Cinema Group.

You are now the proud owner of an official "WITCHBOARD" from the new movie which stars Stephen Nichols, Todd Allen and Tawny Kitaen (opening at your neighborhood theater on Friday the 13th of March).
"Witchboards" or ouija boards as they're also known, have been used in the United States since the 19th Century for contacting the spirit world.

The same could essentially be said for Witchboard, a better-than-average (but not by much) supernatural horror movie from the mid-‘80s that has enjoyed a curious level of popularity for the past two decades.
I have no idea, but clearly Witchboard has retained enough of a faithful audience to earn a DVD release with plenty of extras from Anchor Bay.
Anchor Bay’s widescreen DVD includes commentary by director Tenney as well as a battery of TV and theatrical trailers, as well as a cardboard Ouija board, with which viewers can enjoy their very own demonic possession.

Arrow In The Head's movie review of Witchboard: Tawny Kitaen/Linda, Todd Allen/Jim, Stephen Nichols/Brandon
"Witchboard" uses the seldom-used angle of the Ouija board in genre films as its springboard and eventually takes us on a trip down intrigue and possession lane.
Since the flick was shot on a relatively small budget, writer/director Kevin Tenney had to flex his muscles where it mattered: on the script and the visuals.
The movie has two sequels: "Witchboard 2" with Amy Dolenz (a decent sequel written and directed buy Tenney) and "Witchboard 3" (a piece of crap co-written by Tenney).

Witchboard — DVD Review - Horror Movies
Witchboard was made in 1986 and the movie makes no attempt to hide it.
Some excellent steadicam and ingenious camera angles rescue Witchboard from relegation to the ‘so bad, it’s good’ category, taking it instead to the ‘it may be cheap, but it’s still good’ slot.
Anchor Bay has treated the movie to a new anamporhic transfer and the picture is terrific, looking a world away from the grainy rental VHS tapes where the movie first gained popularity.

 Witchboard - DVD - Title W Shopping at dooyoo.co.uk
'Witchboard' is quite a rarity amongst 80s horror films in that it relies upon atmosphere and suspense rather than gore or nudity.
'Witchboard' is certainly one of the better films to have made use of that creepy device, the ouija board.
'Witchboard' goes some way to reconciling the two approaches, attempting to draw the best elements from both sub-genres.

 notcoming.com | Witchboard
In case you’ve never heard of the ubiquitous parlor game, a Witchboard or Ouija board, is nothing more than a flat piece of cardboard, sized to fit comfortably on the lap, displaying the letters of the alphabet, the numbers 0-9, and the words yes, no, hello, and goodbye.
The apparently simple pastime is, however, overshadowed by a widespread belief in the Ouija’s supernatural powers, specifically, that the board serves as a portal allowing the living to commune with the spirits of the dead.
Despite its shortcomings, however, Witchboard is, in the end, worthwhile horror, a competent entry that successfully blends the less urbane features of the genre with genuinely creepy moments of terror; in short, it is a film that deserves a look by both indiscriminate viewers and genre purists alike.

None of the "Witchboard" movies are great, but they all have good qualities.
As in the first film, all of the characters refer to the board as a "Wee-juh," not "Wee-gee." This was probably the most satisfying of the films, but it still wasn't that good.

The plot of Witchboard centers around Linda Brewster (no relation to Punky) and the evil that befalls her whilst trying to communicate with the dead with a Ouija board.
A similar phenomenon was experienced in the slightly-better sequel WITCHBOARD II: DEVIL'S DOORWAY when the resident hippie landlord bitch was taken out (along with her van) by a runaway wrecking ball.

This so-called horror "series" was yet another example of one mildly successful horror film spawning a number of totally crappy, completely worthless spin offs which barely even deserve the honor of being called "real movies."

 Wichboard III: The Possession
This series is interesting in that each of the three movies was based on a related but pretty unique idea.
The first dealt with someone becoming entrapped by the witchboard, the second was a spirt trying to seek vengeance through the witchboard, and the third was a demon of a fertility cult trying to find a human host it could use to generate spawn through the witchboard.
Also interesting is that none of the ideas is particularly bad and each of them can pretty much be judged independent of the others.
