  Witelo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Witelo's major surviving work on optics, called Perspectiva was dedicated to William of Moerbeke.
He argues that there are intellectual and corporeal bodies, connected by causality (corresponding to the Idealist doctrine of the universal and the actual) emanating from God in the form of Divine Light.
Light itself is, for Witelo, the first of all sensible entities, and his views on light are similar to those held by Roger Bacon.

He held intellectual intercourse with the philosopher Thomas Aquinas, the mathematician John Campanus, the naturalist physician Witelo, and the astronomer Henri Bate of Mechlin.
The Polish physician Witelo, whose curious personality has been made known by M. Bacumker, wrote his "Perspectives" at the instance of Brother William of Moerbeke, the lover of truth (veritatis amatori), to whom he dedicated his treatise.
Witelo was one of the authorized representatives of Neo-Platonism.

In this treatise Witelo describes the laws of the propagation of light, according to Albacen; it contains many striking and original observations on the function of mental association in the sensation-process, especially in the visual perception of the third dimension of space.
Witelo is probably the author of another unfinished work, De Intelligentiis, which Dr. Baeumker attributes to him, and which he apparently interrupted in order to write the Perspectiva.
Witelo's psychology is Platonic and Neo-Platonic; but at the same time it incorporates Aristotelian theories on the formation of ideas.

A natural philosopher and optical scientist, Witelo probably studied arts at the University of Paris, and later canon law at Padua.
During an Easter holiday (probably sometime between 1262 and 1265), he wrote Tractatus de primaria causa penitentie et de natura demonum, an astronomical work that plots the movement of the sun, the lunar cycle, and the variation of day and night.

Completed his Perspectiva which was destined to remain a standard text on optics for several centuries.
Amongst other things, Witelo described a method of machining parabolic mirrors from iron and carried out careful observations on refraction.
He recognised that the angle of refraction is not proportional to the angle of incidence but was unaware of total internal reflection.
