Topic: Witherite

  Witherite, Montana
During the field season of 1923 considerable witherite was observed filling cavities in the Altyn limestone of the Belt series in Glacier National Park.
The witherite appears: (1) in flat masses one to six inches in thickness parallel to the bedding; (2) in thin lenses one to three inches thick and six to eighteen inches across; and (3) in very irregular lumps up to two feet in diameter.
Evidently the openings were completed before the witherite began to fill them; replacement was not simultaneous with the solution of the wall rock.

 Barite from El Portal California
In thin section, witherite is discriminated from calcite by its less perfect cleavage, extinction parallel with the best cleavage direction, the very marked change of relief on rotating the lower Nicol, and by its twinning.
Witherite exhibits the usual cyclic twinning on m 110, whereby pseudohexagonal groups are produced: the angle m: m' is 118° 30'.
Further, since the laminae in adjacent individuals of the cyclic twin do not extinguish together, the twin plane for the polysynthetic twinning is different from that for the cyclic twinning, i.e., the twin-plane for the polysynthetic twinning is a prism other than 110.

Witherite crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and virtually always is twinned.
It is commonly associated with fluorite, celestite, galena, barite, calcite and aragonite.
Witherite was named for William Withering (1741-1799) an English physician and naturalist.

Witherite is deposited hydrothermally, so perhaps a cavity within the sample held enclosed and entrapped, some of the original solution of genesis, with dissolved gasses exerting internal pressure.
The witherite vein is practically vertical and varies in width from 4 to 12 ft. Exceptionally, a 30 ft. width has been exposed, but the average is something like 8 ft. Of the vein characteristics, a stringer of zinc blende intercalated in the witherite, known as the "lead" is a feature of interest.
Rapid changes in the vein matrix constitute a deposition enigma; contrasting features are pure transparent witherite, witherite in granular crystalline form, witherite with a varying disposition of gangue mineral, brecciated country rock and the presence of argillaceous shale are admixtures of frequent occurrence.

 Witherite
Witherite is a somewhat rare mineral that is usually found associated with galena in veins.
Like barite, it is surprisingly heavy for its size but can be distinguished from barite because witherite will effervesce in HCl while barite will not.
Witherite was named for its discoverer, D. Withering.
