  IHIMAERA, Witi
IHIMAERA, Witi (Witi Tame Ihimaera-Smiler) (1944–), novelist, short story writer, anthologist and librettist, was born in Gisborne.
Ihimaera was interested in writing from an early age, and recalls scrawling stories across the whole wall of his room at the family farm at Whakarau.
Central to Ihimaera’s fiction is the fact that the kaupapa he writes to has as its central goal the interpretation and reinterpretation of the concerns of the *iwi from the viewpoint of the past.

Witi Tame Ihimaera-Smiler (born 1944), generally known as Witi Ihimaera, is a New Zealand author, and is often regarded as the most prominent Maori writer alive today.
Ihimaera was born near Gisborne, a town in the east of New Zealand's North Island.
He began to work as a diplomat at the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1973, and served at various diplomatic posts in Canberra, New York, and Washington, D.C. Ihimaera remained at the Ministry until 1989, although his time there was broken by several fellowships at Otago University and Victoria University of Wellington.

Described by Witi Ihimaera as an attempt to write a Maori western, this 'exuberant novel É with a New Zealand brand of magical realism' recounts the rivalry between two great Maori families of shearers and sportsmen and women spanning the period from World War 1 to the 1990s.

But the basis for that film was Witi Ihimaera's magical, lore-laden novel "Whale Rider," a bittersweet story about a Maori girl and her mysterious destiny.
Not a lot of books and movies handle the Maori, who are the native people of New Zealand, and Ihimaera does an excellent job of conveying the creation myths, a handful of traditions, and the danger to it now (illustrated by Rawiri's journeys to Australia and Papua New Guinea).
Told with an insider's perspective, both the uncle in the story and the author are Maori, Ihimaera uses phrases of Maori language authenticated in the glossary.

Similar to Whale Rider, in that it's a coming of age (coming out of the closet?) story of a young Maori fighting against the bias and proud traditions of one's tribal family.
