Witley, in Surrey, England (grid reference SU946396) has existed as a village since at least Saxon times, as is clear from the surviving Saxon stonework in All Saints Church.
He was the lord of the manor of Witley and this is believed to be part of an unfinished memorial to one of his bailiffs.
Witley Infants School, opposite the church, is a fine example of a 19th century school - constructed one year before Queen Victoria was crowned, in 1836.

In 1655 the existing Jacobean house was bought and enlarged by Thomas Foley, the son of an early Stourbridge iron master.
It was in 1846 at the age of 28, Lord Ward came into his inheritance and began the transformation of Witley Court.
He made Witley Court one of the great fashionable houses of late Victorian and Edwardian times, until its sale in 1920 following the tragic death of his wife Rachel who drowned in a swimming accident in County Galway, Ireland.

Plotting the places of birth of the inhabitants of Holt and Little Witley reveals that the largest number, but at 44% not the majority, were born in the two parishes, with 107 in Little Witley and 94 in Holt.
