  Witmarsum Colony, Paraná State, Brazil
The history of Witmarsum began on 7 June 1951 when the families who had not yet left the Krauel Colony in Santa Catarina State, bought the Cancela ranch (17,000 acres; 7,600 hectares), located on the highlands of Paraná State.
Witmarsum made significant economic progress in the last decades of the 20th century.
The school, Mennonite Brethren congregation, and Sunday school were terminated already within the first eight years, in part because of the early death of the founder and teacher Franz Hübert, in part because of crop failures and marketing difficulties.

 Menno Simons (1496-1561)
Menno was born in 1496 (exact date unknown) in the little village of Witmarsum, Dutch province of Friesland.
In addition to this work he was also studying the Word of God and writing pamphlets to strengthen and guide those in need of spiritual help and to win those in danger of losing their evangelical faith.
It is possible that this occurred while he was still at Witmarsum during the time that he was publicly preaching "the true baptism and the Lord's Supper." But it is more likely that he was not baptized upon confession of his faith until he left Witmarsum.

In 1532 he became pas tor at Witmarsum, where, as he confessed in later years, he preached from motives of ambition rather than conviction.
In the very first years of his parochial activity he be came skeptical of the doctrine of transubstantia tion, and found support for his views on baptism in the New Testament and the writings of Billican, who, with some other Protestants, permitted parents to choose between infant and adult baptism for their children.
This and the execution of the Anabap tist Sicke Snijder at Leeuwarden in 1531 led to re newed study of the Bible and the works of the Reformers, with the result that Menno practically became an Evangelical preacher, though he had not yet broken openly with the Church.
