The War Room: Jason Witten, TE, Tennessee
One of the elite prospects in the country as a linebacker/tight end in high school, Witten had set his sights on becoming a defensive end for the Vols until he arrived on campus and was moved to offense to alleviate a shortage of tight ends.
Witten played as a reserve and on special teams as a freshman, but impressed the Tennessee coaches enough that in the offseason they made the trip from Knoxville to Nashville to discuss with the Titans' staff how to get a tight end more involved in the offense.
Witten would have to forgo his final year of college eligibility in order to be eligible for the 2003 draft, but if he continues to improve, he could soon be a man among boys at that level.

Witten's evolution as a clutch receiver can be seen in the fact that 62 of his 122 career receptions have gone for a first down, including 25 on third down to convert first downs.
Witten posted a season-high 16.2 yard-per-catch average at Cincinnati (11/7) by leading the team with six receptions for 97 yards, including catches of 18, 25 and 33 yards.
Because of a personnel shortage, Witten was moved from defensive end and given a crash course at tight end as a freshman and installed in the lineup behind John Finlayson.

Witten: String theory is an attempt at a deeper description of nature by thinking of an elementary particle not as a little point but as a little loop of vibrating string.
Witten: Even before string theory, especially as physics developed in the 20th century, it turned out that the equations that really work in describing nature with the most generality and the greatest simplicity are very elegant and subtle.
Witten: Back in the early '70s, the Italian physicist, Daniele Amati reportedly said that string theory was part of 21st-century physics that fell by chance into the 20th century.

Guardian Unlimited | Life | String fellows
In his role as de facto scientist-in-chief of string theory, Witten, the Charles Simonyi professor of mathematical physics at the Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton, is undoubtedly the heir to Albert Einstein's title of greatest living physicist.
Incidentally, the M was left undefined by Witten and string theorists have spent many an idle hour speculating what it could stand for: they have come up with a range of possibilities including matrix, muffin, mystery, murky, membrane, monstrous, mother or magic - some scientists believe it is an upside down W for Witten.
Witten can indulge even his most esoteric ideas, a freedom afforded, in part, by the IAS, an almost unique research institute based in what looks like a serene stately home in front of an 800-acre forest in Princeton.

It may be fair to say that Edward Witten is probably not only the holy father of theoretical high energy physics - using the term invented by Friedwardt Winterberg - but quite possibly also the most respected mathematician in the world as of 2005.
Recently I discussed the Langlands duality a bit and included a link to a written version of Witten's talk in Stony Brook that was similar to the talk today which is why I decided not to describe the talk in detail right now.
Witten's talk has shown many things - and one of them is the fact that these "lit crits" have not only an insufficient understanding of string theory but also an outdated idea about topological field theory.

Which, on the face of it, is a little odd, since Witten is not a mathematician but a physicist, a Professor in the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.
In addition to the Fields Medal, physicist Witten has been invited to give two major addresses at national meetings of the American Mathematical Society: he was AMS Colloquium Lecturer in 1987 and three years ago, in 1998, he gave the Gibbs Lecture.
On several occasions, Witten has made a discovery -- a physicist's discovery since it is technically not a mathematical discovery -- that mathematicians subsequently showed to be "correct" by the traditional means of formulating a rigorous proof.
