WITU, or Vitu, a sultanate of East Africa included in the Tanaland province of the British East Africa protectorate.
It extends along the coast from the town of Kipini at the mouth of the Ozi river (2° 30' S.) to the northern limit of Manda Bay (2° S.); area 1200 sq.
The population of the sultanate is over 15,000; of the town of Witu 6000, chiefly Swahilis.

Witu was a protectorate established c.1890 on the coast of East Africa.
Witu had formerly been a small German protectorate, exchanged in 1890, along with Zanzibar, for Helgoland and the Caprivi Strip.
Witu was a relatively small area to the north of the coastal strip leased from the Sultan of Zanzibar by the Imperial British East Africa Company.
