RAND: The Employment and Earnings of Military Wives
Military wives withdrawing from the labor force may devote more time to on-base activities (e.g., supporting junior or recently relocated families), as is customarily expected of the wives of higherranking personnel, or simply to personal activities.
Military wives lose fewer weeks of work than civilian wives for a move of a given length, but the greater frequency and distance of their moves mean military wives lose more work time to moves than do civilian wives.
Employers, knowing military wives move frequently, condition their job offers on the expectation that a military wife will not be with a firm long and that she faces a trade-off between searching longer for a higher wage and starting work at a lower wage.

The wives, mothers, and children, too, were all safe, as well as unsuspicious of danger; for Romulus had given special charge that no married woman should be molested.
They were chiefly unarmed, and wholly unprepared for so sudden an attack, and they fled in all directions in dismay, protecting themselves and their wives and children as well as they could, as they retired, and aiming only to withdraw as large a number as possible from the scene of violence and confusion that prevailed.

CANOE -- JAM! Music - Pop Encyclopedia - Battered Wives
True to the punk rock ethos, Toronto's The Battered Wives, like the Viletones and The Forgotten Rebels, were born into controversy.
Despite the controversy, or maybe because of it, the Battered Wives built up a huge following which managed to push the sales of the self-titled debut to gold status (50,000 copies) -- an unprecedented event for a debut by a Canadian 'New Wave' group at the time.
The Wives had seen no promotion on the western leg of their 1979 tour and asked to be released from their deal with Epic Records citing breach of contract.

William Shakespeare: Merry Wives of Windsor
The "Merry Wives of Windsor" is no doubt a very amusing play, with a great deal of humour character, and nature in it: but we should have liked it much better if any one else had been the hero of it, instead of Falstaff.
In the system of intrigued comedy, the "Merry Wives of Windsor" may be said to be almost perfect in its composition; it presents a true picture of manners, the denouement is as piquant as it is well-prepared; and it is assuredly one of the merriest works in the whole comic repertory.
"The Merry Wives of Windsor" is the work of Shakspeare in which he has best displayed English manners for though there is something of this in the historical plays, yet we rarely see in them such a picture of actual life as comedy ought to represent.

Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord.

The Stepford Wives is one of the few films where you're forced to take sides in a gender war (I can't think of anything so compelling to come after it until "In the Company of Men").
Their wives, on the other hand, are flower-print dress wearing, sexually grateful, perpetually cleaning morons - they don't even know what the word "archaic" means - and that's what they are!
The Stepford Wives could only have been made in the 70s - an 80s or 90s version would have had everyone tightly wrapped up by Sigourney Weaver at the end, and the film would have lost its power to scare, or to remain in your head long after the final credits have rolled.

THE postcard-pretty "The Stepford Wives" boasts a stellar ensemble cast and some priceless one-liners — but those pearls of acerbic wit have been strung together on a cheap piece of thread which almost inevitably breaks in the third act.
The film was reportedly tinkered with endlessly in post-production, and the most glaring example of its disjointed nature is in the treatment of the titular characters.
The movie can't make up its mind whether the too-perfect wives of Stepford are actual robot replacements — the "twist" of the original, which is now so familiar it has entered the vernacular — or merely the real-life women with "Stepfordizing" chips implanted in their brains.

We gain an insight into the stresses placed upon these husbands and wives by the calls of patriotism, political and military duty, and career ambition on one hand, and the responsibility to home and family on the other.

Molière wrote The School for Wives (L'École des Femmes), which appeared at the Palais Royal as a Christmas novelty.

SparkNotes: The Merry Wives of Windsor: Context
Likely the most influential writer in all of English literature and certainly the most important playwright of the English Renaissance, William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, England.
It's also one of his most farcical works, using physical gags and linguistic jokes to establish a comic tone that influence the play's ultimate spirit of reconciliation, after all the intrigues have been sorted out.
Merry Wives gives an impression of life in an English provincial town as it was lived at the time of the play's first performance.

Stepford Wives - The Terminal - New York Magazine Movie Review
The 1975 adaptation of the Ira Levin novel, with Katharine Ross, was a creepy, straightforward thriller; the redo is all-out farce.
Levin’s novel, set in the fictional village of Stepford, Connecticut, was a bejeweled contraption with every suspenseful detail riveted in place; his wealthy, New Canaan—style community was populated by boorish, unattractive husbands with inexplicably dutiful, picture-perfect wives who turned out to be robots fashioned by the men to meet their every desire.
The desires were few, really—the wives were Betty Crockers in the kitchen, Playmates in bed.
