 Failure Magazine-Archives-Arts & Entertainment-The Wizard Of Oz
The Oz movie legacy began unceremoniously in 1925 with a silent screen version starring Oliver Hardy, which was called "The Wizard of Oz" but made dramatic departures from Baum’s plot lines.
In 1902 a musical version of "The Wizard of Oz" was produced; it was successful enough to tour the country for nine years, spending a year-and-a-half on Broadway.
The film’s unfavorable balance sheet was undoubtedly due to the outbreak of World War II (which cut off most of the European market for the film), the fact that the child-dominated audience paid lower admission fees, and because 1939 was a great year for motion pictures.

Victor Fleming - The Wizard of Oz Movie (1939)
A cartoon sequel, Journey Back to Oz, with Judy Garland's daughter Liza Minnelli providing the voice of Dorothy, was made in 1971; in 1978 Diana Ross starred in an all-black grown-up version called The Wiz, and there had been a silent film of The Wizard of Oz in 1925.
Yet despite all this and some reviews that verged on the grudging, this fantastical story of a young girl and her dog, transplanted by a storm to the land of Oz and trying to get back to Kansas, remains the yardstick against which all other cinematic fairy tales must be measured.
The latter, lacking sound, was hardly in the same class and the other two can best be regarded as tributes, rather than rivals, to the 1939 picture.

Metropolis (1927), black and white, 119 minutes, not rated, with Nosferatu (1922), black and white, 80 minutes, not rated, and The Phantom of the Opera (1925), black and white and color, 107 minutes, not rated.
In its truncated form, Metropolis is at times a little confusing — not a big surprise since an estimated one-quarter of the original Berlin release of the film is still missing from surviving prints and some intertitles are badly translated into English and most times intentionally changing the storyline to disguise its choppy, shortened form.

Swartz makes clear that the popular stage musical influenced silent film depictions of Oz, including a multimedia show (1908), a one-reel short produced by Selig Studios (1910) and a full-length feature film (1925) that portrayed Dorothy as a flirtatious flapper and co-starred Oliver Hardy as the Tin Woodman.
Comprehensive examinations of each production provide behind-the-scenes information, including: battles over the legal rights to Baum's stories and over the financial backing for each play or film; different strategies to market each production; set and costume designs; special effects (how to create a tornado on stage); box-office receipts; and reactions of audiences and newspaper critics.
He documents how the show evolved during its tour of the US, changing songs or adding topical jokes to keep the production fresh.
