After 1400, the remainder of Wladyslaw II Jagiello's reign was taken up with issues close to home, including defending against the Tatars and struggles with western Russia and the Teutonic Order in Prussia.
Polish and Lithuanian concerns for equal representation within their union emerged after Wladyslaw II Jagiello's death in 1434, but when Kasimir IV (1477-1492) ascended to the throne in 1446, an uneasy peace was again established.

The Polish and Hungarian armies under Wladyslaw III and Janos Hunyadi were crushed at the Battle of Varna in 1444 by the Ottoman Turks under Murad II.
Wladyslaw I was elected ruler by the Polish nobles in 1296 but when they reversed their decision in 1300, Wladyslaw I moved to gain control by military means and he was crowned king of Poland at Krakow in 1320.
The war was resumed at the insistence of the papacy and Wladyslaw III was killed in battle at Varna in November, 1444.

Lokietek's son, Casimir III, was born in 1310 and was the only Polish king distinguished as "Great." His reign laid the foundation for future Polish grandeur.
However, general Wladyslaw Anders, commanding officer of the so called First Polish Corps, decided to move his troops to Middle East and join British and American forces fighting in the African theater; they especially proved their might during the siege of the fortress city of Tobruk.
Following Stalin's death in 1953, in 1956 Wladyslaw Gomulka, a moderate "national Communist" came to power, initiating the period known as "The Thaw." Gomulka was able to obtain a significant degree of cultural and economic autonomy.

Lokietek ("The Short") became the first ruler of a unified Polish state since the death of Prince Boleslaw Krzywousty (Boleslaus the Wrymouthed) in 1138, not counting the short reign of the Czech King Waclaw II (Vaclav II).
His reign was marked by wars against the March of Brandenburg, the Teutonic Knights, and the Kingdom of Bohemia (ruled by John of Luxembourg), to defend the newly established unity of the Kingdom.
Lokietek hired the Teutonic Knights to retake the city.

By 1320 Wladyslaw Lokietek (1314-33), called the Short, had manipulated internal and foreign alignments and reunited enough territory to win acceptance abroad as king of an independent Poland.
His son Kazimierz III (1333-70) would become the only Polish king to gain the sobriquet "great." In foreign policy, Kazimierz the Great strengthened his country's position by combining judicious concessions to Bohemia and the Teutonic Knights with eastward expansion.
