Wladyslaw IV was also patron of the arts: he sponsored many musicians and created the first amphitheater in the Warsaw castle, where during his reign dozens of operas and ballets were performed.
Wladyslaw IV invested in decorative architecture (like the famous Sigismund’s III Column in Warsaw erected in honor of his father, King of Poland) assembled an important collection of Italian and Flemish Baroque paintings, much of which was lost during the wars.
Wladyslaw IV died in 1648 of kidney infection.

In the war against Russia in 1632-1634 (the Smolensk War), Wladyslaw succeeded in breaking the siege in September 1633 and then in turn surrounded the Russian army, which was then forced to surrender on March 1, 1634.
Wladyslaw suffered continuing difficulties caused by the efforts of the Polish Sejm (parliament) to check the King's power and limit his dynastic ambitions.
Władysław IV is one of the personages in a famous painting by Jan Matejko, depicting the preaching of Piotr Skarga.

In 1618, during the session of the Commonwealth parliament (Sejm) and ignoring the opposition of magnate Zbarski and his allies, king Zygmunt III Waza granted the bu³awa (ceremonial mace or baton) of Grand Crown Hetman to Stanis³aw ¯ó³kiewski and the baton of Field Crown Hetman to Koniecpolski.
After the king´s death, the hetman played a major role directing political affairs in the Commonwealth and supported the free election of the son of Zygmunt, W³adys³aw IV Waza in 1632.
Unfortunately, king Wladyslaw continued to push for a crusade against Turkey, but with little internal support failed to achieve anything except to spread false hopes among the Cossacks, to whom he promised priviliges and money for participation in that crusade.

 Guidelines for the spelling of names of Polish rulers
Using 'Hedwig' for Jadwiga sounds really bad for me. I'm for translating attributes (the Great, of Adjou etc.) and Western names (John, Alexander, Louis, August etc.) and leaving Slavic names in Polish spelling (Boleslaw, Wladyslaw etc.).
I agree about Jadwiga, since Hedwig sounds very German and could be confusing.
I will try to remember to check in my books on the 30 Years' War, etc...

(King Sigismund in Polish he is known as Zygmunt III Waza, in Sweden he is known as Sigismund I. At the time the Hapsburgs ruled much of Germany and Spain.
Apparently King Ladislaus Vasa (Wladyslaw IV Waza) (1632-48), son of Sigismund III, did not care for this fasion.
