King of Poland and grand duke of Lithuania in 1648-68; the son of Sigismund III Vasa.
The last ruler of the Vasa dynasty to occupy the Polish and Lithuanian thrones, Jan was elected king after the death of his brother Wladyslaw IV Vasa.
After the Soviet ‘Great Blockade' in the Carpathian Mountains in 1946, denied food and shelter, and forced to fight on the march at extremely low temperatures, the UPA (with the exception of the units operating in Ukrainian ethnic territories annexed by Poland after 1944) was forced to demobilize most combat troops.

 Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library: Recent Acquisitions 1998
The manuscript was heavily read and annotated, and appears to have traveled widely: though produced in the Ukraine, it was later in Russia, and then in Poland by the 18th century.
The first text also has a Polish connection, in that Pibrac, the 16th-century French jurist and poet, was sent to Poland in 1573 by Charles IX as chancellor to his brother Henry, who had been elected king of that country.
Born in Lodz, Poland, in 1933, Jerzy Kosinski was educated in his native country, where he read sociology and history.
