At the time of Schauder's studies the chair of theoretical physics was for a few years temporarily occupied by an experimental physicist Stanislaw Loria (1883-1958), who probably would not have attracted the attention of the mathematically minded Schauder.
(I learned from K. Maurin that Wladyslaw Orlicz, who was a student of physics at the University at approximately the same time as Schauder, once said that when he went to Gottingen to prepare his Ph.D. in theoretical physics, he realized that his education in Lwów had been absolutely insufficient.

Banach's work and that of his students, such as Mazur, Orlicz, Schauder, and Ulam created the field of mathematics known as "Functional Analysis," the mathematics of the nuclear age.
Besides the contributions that bear Banach's name, there are: Orlicz space, Sierpinski's curve, Borsuk's retract, Polish Space, and Reverse Polish notation that proved a godsend to calculator manufacturers and computer programmers.
Wladyslaw Orlicz went to the University of Poznan to continue his research and to build a quality mathematics department.
