Topic: Wmii

Wmii - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The initial letter is capitalized due to technical limitations.
wmii is a dynamic window manager for X11.
It supports classic and dynamic window management with extended keyboard, mouse, and filesystem based remote control.

Der Wiener Lloyd » Blog Archive » wmii-1 released
Most important ones are the new socket-based filesystem approach to customize and interoperate with wmii and the new layout mechanism, which provides a new window management approach.
Apart from these approaches wmii is highly modularized and consists of several binaries, see wmii(1), wmibar(1), wmifs(1), wmiinput(1), wmikeys(1), wmiplumb(1), wmir(1), and wmiwarp(1) for details.
A nice side effect of the decision to implement wmii in C resulted in a smaller code base and much smaller binaries compared to wmi.

There is much more that can be done and browsing the wmii web site will go through the various things.
The 'tcp' port used for 'wmii' communication is hard coded to port 5000 and is not bound to the IP address of the machine.
Unfortunately the open access to the socket is in the C source code as I did that to work around a problem I was having which I hope to resolve in the next release.

Weather Monitor II and Wizard III Stations [Prodata Weather Systems]
The WMII is traditionally the best-known Davis station and has been sold widely around the world over many years as a workhorse for serious but cost-effective weather monitoring.
The standard WMII model is supplied with anemometer and temperature sensor as with the standard Wizard model, but the WMII console additionally contains a pressure sensor (pressure does not vary locally at constant height and therefore the pressure sensor does not need to be sited outdoors).
Overall, the WMII models can offer very cost-effective and reliable weather monitoring if the parameters to be measured are basic (eg perhaps just temperature and/or wind speed and direction) and the monitoring requirement is very unlikely to increase in scope at a later date.

As founder and main developer of wmii I came to the conclusion that wmii is too clunky for my needs.
wmii never got finished because I listened to users, who proposed arbitrary ideas I considered useful.
In contrast to ion, larswm, and wmii, dwm is much smaller, faster and simpler.

 Minix Tips
I've ported 'wmii' which is another minimal window manager but has a little more functionality.
'wmii' uses the Plan 9 filesystem protocol to allow it to be scripted.
It should be possible to write a Minix device driver that allowed this to be mounted to the filesystem so you could interact with 'wmii' using standard Minix utilities.

eigenclass - Automagic (generalizable) working set discovery, improved ruby-wmii WM scripting 0.2.1
It seems I'm not the only Rubyist who likes the wmii window manager, so I decided to release my wmiirc configuration in Ruby formally.
It's cleaner than the original one, and I've added lots of good stuff: view/tag namespaces, new view switching mechanisms, new actions, improved handling of numeric tags (a superset of _why's bindings, can be used with and without numerical tags), better retagging, etc.
A possible solution can be found on wmii's wiki: a key binding that jumps to the first view starting with the pressed letter.

There was no package for wmii 3 in Ubuntu Dapper, but there was one for Edgy.
I first downloaded the.deb file for Edgy, but when I tried to install it, there was a libc6 incompatibility for that binary package.
Therefore, I needed to recompile wmii 3 and build a new.deb that was Dapper-compatible.
