The county rises and falls in a series of gentle hills and valleys, from a flat, clay plain in the north through a belt of sandy hills stretching from Woburn to Sandy to a higher ridge of chalk downs in the south of the county, where the highest point of 801 feet is reached.

  Abbeys
Woburn was established in 1145 under the patronage of Hugh de Bolebec and at the advice of Abbot Henry Murdac of Fountains.
In 1204 Woburn must have had a community of at least twenty-six for it was large enough to provide a colony of monks for a daughter foundation at Medmenham.
The abbey soon regained its wealth and by the 1280s Woburn was one of the wealthiest in the county.

Major General Robert Sedgwick was baptized in infancy at Woburn, Bedfordshire, England, and the town, being early explored by him, received the name of his birthplace, Woburn, according to a custom of the day; Duxbury, Groton, and Haverhill, Massachusetts, being similarly named in honor of the birthplaces of Standish, Winthrop, and Ward.
Woburn was the first town to be set off from Charlestown, and a first explorers authorized by Charlestown to discover the territory of Woburn were Edward Converse, William Brackenbury and Abraham Palmer, who were empowered to perform this work in 1635.
In 1800 the population of Woburn was 1228.

Queen Elizabeth made a journey to this place, in 1572 ; and when Charles I. visited Woburn, in 1645, notwithstanding that the Earl of Bedford was then in the service of the parliament, the monarch slept at the abbey.
The church, which is dedicated to St. Mary, was erected by Robert Hobbs, the last abbot of Woburn: it presents a singular appearance, being nearly covered with ivy.
About six yards from the north aisle, and detached from the main building, is a Quadrangular embattled tower, scarcely fifty feet high, strengthened with buttresses at the angles, terminating in pinnacles, and surmounted by a cupola.

Farey attended a local school in Woburn until he was sixteen years of age when he went to a school in Halifax, Yorkshire, where he studied mathematics, drawing and surveying.
Francis, the fifth Duke of Bedford had extensive estates in Bedfordshire and, in 1792, he appointed Farey as the land steward for his Woburn estates.
Farey held this post for ten years and it was during this time that he was able to gain expertise in geology.
