 Wolds Way: Hessel Haven to North Newbald
We took quite a while driving to and locating Hessel Haven, where the Wolds Way begins, but once we arrived there Ron and I set off immediately, waving farewell to Tanya as she drove off.
Eventually we glimpsed the end of the improvement work, still some way off, but were sufficiently encouraged to increase our pace and at length we succeeded in reaching this place and scrambled up the slimy, seaweed strewn boulders to the soft grassy track above.
The climb up Little Wold, although tiring, permitted us a clear view of the fields to each side, and they were very pleasing to the eye.

It also describes the running of the Two Moors Way in Spring 2000 by Roy McKee and and is written in an entertaining but informative manner.
The Two Moors Way does not precisely follow the tramway, but the two are so close together that it is far easier to follow the latter.

 Tranquillity Trail
Turn right and you are now back on the Yorkshire Wolds Way which continues along the lane ahead before turning off on to a track into Thixendale on the left.
Follow the path alongside the stream to the stile and (often muddy) crossing on to the wold and continue steeply up to the stile on to the Yorkshire Wolds Way near Warren Farm.
The Wolds Way turns left but continue ahead along the lane, passing the two entrances to Home Farm and houses on the left, to take the third turning leading to Kilnwick Percy village and the Madhyamata Centre.

We continued along the Minster Way for about 3km to map ref. SE 849540 where is joins the Wolds Way in Nettle Dale.
We followed the path through the farm to join the Wolds Way at map ref. SE 874584.
We turned right to follow the Wolds Way down a steepsided valley called Holm Dale, for about 1.5km to map ref. SE 884575.

Pocklington is ideally situated near the half-way point of the Wolds Way and makes an excellent base for excursions along the walk.
Strictly speaking, Pocklington is not on the Wolds Way - but the route passes along the escarpment about 2 miles behind Pocklington.

A jink around Jessop's Plantation, a touch of Nettledale and we joined the Chalkland Way and eased into Frendal Dale, a classic clean-cut shape, hardly a tree, a kestrel in the sky, bumble bees on the nodding thistles and a poppy or two on the white-flecked molehills.
One had to feel for them as their fields of ripe wheat stood sodden, begging to be harvested, with one head of grain in a hundred flening with mould.

But it is on foot however, on the National Trail that the Wolds really come into their own, for as well as the village and the vastness of the Wolds’ tops you get to see the tiny uninhabited dales tucked into the chalk hills.

The second way is further but flat – just how tired am I? Another point in favour of the latter route is that if I go that way I will know the way out of the village to continue the WW [Newbald is off my map].
On the way I meet the landlady Christine (to whom I have spoken on the phone) and landlord George (who is in and out of the back door).
Chap in his garden says ‘I thought you were lost the way you were looking at that map!’ Reach a small green, WW leaves the road on the far side of it up a ramped pavement and steps by the side of a house.

We parked in the village street next to the church and whilst we were putting on our boots we noticed a deer watching us from the hillside over the roof of the house opposite.
We continued on the Wolds Way around the edge of Deep Dale to the abandoned medieval village of Wharram Percy.
From the village we followed the Centenery Way up to the car park by the road at map ref. SE 867644 and turned right onto the road for about a kilometer to map ref. SE 868634.
