Donnie Yen's debut as a director
He had done so many films and if he was going to direct a film and go back to the same pattern, the same editing style and choreography, he could not compete with Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, or Yuen Woo Ping.
The film was shot for less than half a million dollars and under enormously difficult circumstances, yet Yen delivered big bang for the buck in a series of hyper-kinetic action sequences, along with arty camerawork and romantic lyricism.
When he looks at this film, under those circumstances; the environment and lack of support, he admits that his willingness to pull it off despite all of that was surprising.

Wolf is fact-based up to a point--the legend is true and most of the film's characters did exist except for Mani--but writer Stephane Cabel and director Christophe Gans still manage plenty of wiggle room for their own unique genre juggling.
Gans also salutes the enduring horror flicks from Hammer Films, with their attendant grisly shocks amid the classiest of surroundings; groove to the first half's careful buildup of the beast's inevitable appearance, then enjoy the animatronic wonder on screen from Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

Le Pacte Des Loups (Brotherhood of the Wolf) (2002) - Ninth Symphony Films Review
While it is very common to include such types of fighting techniques in all manner of modern action films, in a period piece (meaning a film that takes place in a time other than the present), the story seems off kilter in places.
But given that the film itself is based on an actual myth from French lore, criticizing the action sequences for historical correctness seems like a futile exercise, given that those scenes are actually quite well done, technically.
Certainly the performance of Mark Dacascos (playing one of the men sent to the French countryside to deal with the wolf beast) borders more on the melodramatic than realistic, though the humor from his character is a welcome addition to the weightiness of the story.

THE WOLF MAN: THE LEGACY COLLECTION - DVD
The Wolf Man is a beast without home or purpose, a welcome addition to monster tag-teams but otherwise a second-tier entity who failed to capture the public's imagination as something to be taken beyond face value.
In-between the sliding accents and expository dialogue, the film manages to forget the whole reason we showed up in the first place, which is monster-on-monster action; for the most part, Talbot is mostly all about repressing his wolfish side, while Lugosi's Monster is a sad and disoriented creature until the final three minutes.
The film's mix is also the least of the four films, yet its tinniness is not enough to merit more than a brief mention.

However there have been a few recent films that were released straight to video in the United States that I think are among the best werewolf horror pictures made in the last ten years or so.
The only other strike against the werewolf genre film is that perhaps more than any other subgenre of horror picture, werewolf movies are inherently tragic and often can be depressing especially when you care about the protagonist.
All four films are presented in their original (1.33:1) theatrical release aspect ratios and considering the age of the films, I think they look pretty good.
