The Wolf Man - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was The Wolf Man that introduced the concepts of werewolves being vulnerable to silver (in traditional folklore, it’s more effective against vampires), the werewolf's forced shapeshifting under a full moon, and being marked with a pentagram (a symbol of the occult and of Satanism).
The Wolf Man is a 1941 horror film written by Curt Siodmak and produced and directed by George Waggner, starring Lon Chaney Jr, Claude Rains, Evelyn Ankers, Ralph Bellamy, Patric Knowles, Bela Lugosi, and Maria Ouspenskaya.
This time the Wolf Man was a hero of sorts, saving Wilbur Grey (Lou Costello) from having his brain transplanted by Dracula (Bela Lugosi) into the head of the monster (Glenn Strange).

Sergei Pankejeff - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Freud's first publication on the "Wolf Man" was "From the History of an Infantile Neurosis" (Aus der Geschichte einer infantilen Neurose), written at the end of 1914 but not published until 1918.
Sergei Konstantinovitch Pankejeff (Russian: Сергей Константинович Панкеев) (December 24, 1886–May 7, 1979) was a Russian aristocrat from Odessa, who was best known for being a patient of Sigmund Freud, who gave him the pseudonym of Wolf Man (der Wolfsmann) to protect his identity, after a dream Pankejeff had of a tree full of white wolves.
The Pankejeff family (note: this is Freud's German transliteration from the Russian; in English it would today be transliterated as Pankeev) owned large estates in both Odessa and near St.

The Wolf Man is the daddy of the modern werewolves, and it's great that Jakks' terrible Van Helsing line has had the unexpected bonus of helping us track down this great figure of the original.

DVDFILE.COM: The Wolf Man (1937) review
THE WOLF MAN is one of my favorites of the Universal Horror canon, a tragic drama of one man's fate, and an inadvertent warning against good samaritanism.
He is told by Maleva, an old gypsy woman, that what he killed was not a real wolf, but a werewolf: and that whoever is bitten by a werewolf and lives will himself become a werewolf.

Classic-Horror Review of The Wolf Man (1941)
The Wolf Man is truly one of the greatest horror films of the ages.
It was unclear in that script whether he was really a werewolf or just believed it to the point of "running around on all fours baying at the moon." Many of the pop-psychology references from the earlier version remained and helped elevate the script beyond a simple rampaging monster story.
Okay, it was actually a German Shepherd named Moose; they couldn't find a wolf who could act the part.

DVD Review - Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman/House Of Frankenstein
Their goal is to rob the corpse of Lawrence Talbot (Lon Chaney, Jr.), better known to audiences as the Wolf Man. Instead of finding the skeleton of a man who’s been dead four years (despite the fact that this film was released only two years after "The Wolf Man"), they find Talbot’s body intact.
Fans of the Frankenstein films may be disappointed that this film focuses mainly on the Wolf Man (come on, "Frankenstein" had at least three sequels by this point!), but "old bolt neck" does get into the action near the end.
Two of these films, "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man" and "House of Frankenstein" are now being made available on one double-feature DVD from Universal Home Video.

 The Wolf Man
The man thought if he moved away where there were no other people, he might teach these women to become good, so he moved his lodge away off on the prairie.
Early in the morning, the man went out to hunt, and as soon as he was out of sight, his wives went up on top of the butte.
Near where they camped was a high butte, and every evening about sundown, the man would go up on top of it, and look all over the country to see where the buffalo were feeding, and if any enemies were approaching.

 DVD.net : The Wolf Man (1931) - DVD Review
The Wolf Man was made in 1941, smack bang in the middle of the ‘monster period’ in Hollywood.
Lon Chaney is truly great as the tormented Larry Talbot/The Wolf Man. He shows great skill in the role, particularly in the second half of the film where he falls into a spiral of despair.
Wonderful stuff, and Siodmak creates a very nice screenplay for The Wolf Man. There were in fact five movies featuring Lon Chaney as the Wolf Man, and in most of the films he meets up with some other monster, such as Dracula and Frankenstein.

What's with the Wolf Man and his clothes?
You'd think that a Wolf Man would be a fairly loose and carefree dresser, but this one has his shirt buttoned up to the top button and the sleeves' cuffs buttoned.
At the end, the Wolf Man is killed and we see his face gradually change back to poor, stupid Larry.
What we have here is not just a man changing into a werewolf, but a man changing into a fussy, uptight, and also selfish werewolf.

The Wolf Man was the final of the five "Universal Monsters" DVDs that I watched, and since they all follow a similar format, I was pretty well-prepared for what I'd get on this DVD.

Another welcome entry in Universal's monster collection, The Wolf Man looks sharper and richer here than it ever has before, though restoration addicts will be dismayed to note that some rough print damage still exists, particularly during the opening credits and a couple of reel changes.
